“Real Possibility” Aaron Rodgers Could Be Headed to the AFC West (But Not to Join the Raiders)

Aaron Rodgers is the NFL’s reigning Most Valuable Player and he could soon be headed to the AFC West.

Less than two weeks ago, Rodgers leaked a message through his representatives that he would prefer to be traded to one of three teams: Las Vegas, Denver, or San Francisco. The 49ers reportedly made a trade push for Rodgers, but were declined. San Francisco then went all-in on North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance with the third pick in the draft.

Presumably, the 49ers are out of the mix for Rodgers.

But what about the Raiders and Broncos?

Of the three teams Rodgers listed as options, the Raiders are the only team that hasn’t legitimately been linked to a potential trade for him. Media personalities, like ESPN’s Mike Greenberg, have pushed the Rodgers-to-the-Raiders narrative based on the perception that Jon Gruden is never satisfied with his starting quarterback, but every piece of information coming out of the Raiders’ building right now is that the Raiders are going to stick with Derek Carr.

Even if they wanted him, the Raiders are in no strong position to trade for Rodgers, in part because the Packers would presumably want to double down on Jordan Love at quarterback if they move on from Rodgers. Carr wouldn’t carry a lot of trade value from the Packers’ perspective. So to say there is even a 5 percent chance the Raiders trade for Rodgers is probably a little optimistic.

But Rodgers may still wind up in the AFC West.

According to NFL Network’s Jesse Palmer, it is a “real possibility” that Rodgers could end up being traded to the Broncos. Denver has a huge need at quarterback and, just as importantly, they have the second-most salary cap space in the NFL.

James Palmer on Twitter: “Aaron Rodgers to the #Broncos. It’s a fit that makes sense to a lot of people. Including ones inside the organization. My report on @nflnetwork pic.twitter.com/4danQDARRM / Twitter”

A week ago, Denver radio host Mark Schlereth stoked the narrative that something was in the works between Denver and Green Bay and it’s entirely possible that the teams are waiting until June 1 (for salary cap purposes) to finalize a deal.

Zac Stevens on Twitter: “Mark Schlereth just reported on @1043TheFan that a deal for the Broncos to land Aaron Rodgers is “as close to a done deal as it can get” / Twitter”

Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers both in the AFC West?

That wouldn’t be ideal for the Raiders.

  1. No way a smart player like Rodgers would want to go the disfunctional Raiders.

    1. I hate this comment, but unfortunately there is a lot of truth to it as well. Still hurts though lol

  2. Life is going to suck for the Raiders if this happens. They will have the toughest trio of QB’s to compete against in any division.

    Patrick Mahomes
    Aaron Rodgers*
    Justin Herbert

This just wouldn’t be fair…I like Carr, but he isn’t on their level… we’ll see how Herbert does following a strong rookie season now that there is film on him

  3. Should what this article has eluded to come to fruition, then since Houston is seemingly “moving on” from Deshaun Watson, wouldn’t it be feasible, with his lowered asking price, for Jon Gruden to consider making a long term move, for the Raiders franchise, and look at the possibility of trading for a long term upgrade, at the quarterback position, in Deshaun Watson? As important as today, right now, is with respect to football, tomorrow has equal relevance and importance. Just like with a lot of football players, Deshaun Watson comes with his share of baggage but his football gifts and strengths are undeniable. Deshaun Watson, at 25 years old, certainly has a lot of good football life in him. Of course, such a move would be Al Davis like and “this franchise,” in it’s current state, is representative of Al Davis in history and name only. Sadly, the “maverick” spirit that was once the trademark of the Raiders is now gone.

    1. If the accusations of Watson prove to be true…then I would never want him on this team. Let alone remain in the league. We are perfectly fine with Carr. Rodgers may be older, but he’s a better QB and a better person

      1. Andrew,
I can not only agree but also understand you position and respect it. Supposedly, EVERYONE in America is innocent (LOL) until proven guilty (unless you are black). Possibly even, there are “some crimes” that Watson “may be” guilty of. None of us, as of yet, knows for sure but America, and the world for that matter, is FULL of flawed individuals. White American men killed indigenous people to steal their land and raped and slaughtered millions of black people for profit but NOW wants to be seen as having exemplary morality, a paragon of virtue, if you will. My point, there are NO PERFECT people. The Bible tells us that “ALL have sinned…..” What Al Davis showed everyone was that even “flawed individuals” could still contribute to society. A significant part of Al Davis’ pedigree was “rehabilitating” and giving a chance to football players that were otherwise considered malcontents and even borderline psychotics bordering on criminal behavior. Al Davis’ ability to “turn these individuals” into productive members of society should not be dismissed and more probably emulated. As the old saying goes, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water” and and even older saying says, “He who is without sin, let him cast the first stone.” NO ONE is perfect, remember that.

  4. I don’t care which qb is available. We (the RAIDERS) would be stupid not to give carr a shot with a decent defense. If our defense finishes top 15 this year and we don’t make the playoffs then I would have no problem moving on from carr .I would be disappointed but we would have to make a move. I believe if our D was top 15 last year we at minimum would have been 11-5. Carr ain’t no slouch and hopefully he shuts a lot of haters up this year…even if we win the super bowl with carr this year we will still have idiot’s tying us to every decent qb available…..F haters…go RAIDERS!!!

  5. If the Raiders don’t try to get Aaron Rodgers it will be a crucial mistake on Jon Gruden second chance with the Raiders Herbert is pretty good for San Diego homes is pretty good for the Chiefs he can make that a hundred million dollars and move on by his business not even tried to make the regular even better if we have an opportunity to get Rodgers we have to move on from carr. He’s being a great Soldier Raiders no disrespect to him I’m a true Raider fan but if we have an opportunity to get Rodgers Dawn the time that Jon Gruden is making this hundred million dollars to make our team irrelevant is Rodgers if Jon Gruden don’t try to get Aaron Rodgers he just out to make the money.

  6. I am the biggest Jon Gruden fan but John we need Aaron Rodgers Raider Nation baby let’s go

  7. John that would be ugly to see Aaron Rodgers in a Broncos uniform and I can’t stand the Broncos and I can’t stand the Chiefs Jon Gruden I need Aaron Rodgers I’m 55 years old I’ve been waiting a long time for this baby come on John let’s make this move just let’s get back to the promise days baby like Rich Gannon that was the best move you made baby by you getting Aaron Rodgers Jon Gruden that was hella from the top that gives us a fighting chance in the lafc reloaded baby and carr and just not the man for it no disrespect to him he’s not the man for the job it’s time to move on Jon Gruden this is an opportunity to other being the top of the if Al Davis was still alive he will waste no time how to get Rodgers at Raider Nation just win baby just win baby
