Report: Adams Might Stay with Raiders, O’Connell Part of the Reason Why

Just two days ago it was being reported that there was almost no chance Davante Adams was going to stay with the Raiders.

48 hours later, it sounds like there has been some level of reconciliation between Adams and the organization.

It was first reported by Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter that sides might be coming together, and on Saturday evening ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the news.

But Schefter added another interesting detail to the dynamic…

“Another factor as to why Adams might not necessarily be moved — and sources insisted it should not be discounted or overlooked — is that he is a big supporter of Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who was named the new starter this week,” Schefter reported on Saturday.

“Adams is a big believer in O’Connell and privately has called him one of the best quarterbacks with whom he has played, according to sources,” Schefter continued. “Playing with O’Connell is said to be appealing to Adams, who will sit out his third straight game Sunday because of a hamstring injury.”

Schefter pointed out that Adams was fine with the Raiders’ decision to start Gardner Minshew at the beginning of the season, but if Davante likes the second-year quarterback enough to impact his trade request, it’s a little surprising the Raiders didn’t roll with O’Connell from the start.

There’s also a good chance Adams is realizing that a trade might not happen and the change at quarterback might be something he can point to as a reason he’s okay with backing away from the stance he took two weeks ago.

It’s all speculation, but one thing we know is that Schefter has been well-connected with Adams’ camp and he’s getting information from the closest sources on Adams’ side of the situation.

Unfortunately for the team and everyone rooting for the Raiders on Sunday, a hamstring injury isn’t going to allow Adams to play this week. Additionally, Jakobi Meyers has now been downgraded to ‘doubtful’ for the Steelers game, so the Raider offense has quite a challenge looming against one of the best defenses in the league.

  1. I’m sorry but I’m going to tell it like it is… It wouldn’t matter if we had Cliff Branch, Fred Biletnikoff and Dave Casper again… We don’t have a quarterback that can complete a forward pass. Watching this Pittsburgh game, O’Connell is scared to get hit! I know the offensive line is average at absolute best, but with our so called quarterbacks, Davante Adams staying really doesn’t make sense. The trade for Trey Lance is honestly what I think we should do. Say what you want about him, but he’s better than what we have. With a suspect O line, you have to have some mobility back there. I’ve been a Raider fan for over forty years and our current quarterback situation reminds of the dark ages of JaMarcus Russell! We had Randy Moss but he couldn’t throw himself the ball! I love you, Nation!!
