Henry Ruggs’ decision to drive impaired cost a young woman her life, but it sounds like it almost cost him his own life, too.
A local Las Vegas report on Wednesday indicated that Ruggs is being accused of traveling upwards of 156 MPH prior to the accident and was moving 127 MPH when the air bags were deployed. Not only that, prosecutors say Ruggs had a blood alcohol level of .161 which is more than twice the legal limit.
A loaded gun was also found in his car.
The Corvette that Ruggs was driving was certainly capable of reaching 156 miles per hour. His particular year and model has been said to reach 100 MPH in just over 7 seconds and can travel a quarter-mile from a standstill in less than 11 seconds.
If Ruggs was traveling 150+ MPH when he rear-ended the Toyota RAV4, it would make sense that his low profile Corvette was able to make impact with the SUV’s gas tank, which is presumably what lit the blaze. Gas tanks are engineered to withstand lesser impacts, but can’t handle anything near the speed that Ruggs was apparently traveling.
As details continue to emerge, the state’s minimum punishment of 2 years in jail is looking like a long shot for Ruggs. If found guilty on all charges, he’ll presumably be looking at longer (and potentially up to 20 years according to Nevada state law).
