Reports Indicate Raiders May End Up Having to Release Marcus Mariota

Does Marcus Mariota have trade value?

According to recent reports, there is some indication that he might not.

The Athletic’s Vic Tafur has been predicting Mariota will have no trade value for several weeks and the Las Vegas Review-Journal hopped on board with that theory this week.

“There is an expectation that Mariota will end up on the market as a cap casualty,” The Las Vegas Review-Journal‘s Vinny Bonsignore reported on Tuesday. “As a result, teams will be averse to giving up assets for someone that will likely be available in free agency.”

The issue with Mariota’s contract appears to be the incentives that can balloon his deal to being worth upwards of $20 million in 2021 if he plays well. Nevertheless, several reports have indicated that teams have been calling about Mariota. The level of trade interest, though, might not be as great as advertised (and it’s worth noting that both of the above reports are coming from Las Vegas beat writers).

The question for teams like the Patriots and Washington Football Team, who have both been linked to Mariota, is how long would they be willing to wait on the Raiders to release Mariota?

Any team interested in Mariota should want to have their quarterback situation addressed before the first wave of free agency. So if the Raiders are willing (and able) to hold onto Mariota for a while, it wouldn’t be ideal for a team (or teams) trying to wait them out.

On the flip side, the Raiders might need Mariota’s $10.725 million cap number off the books in order to afford a player they want in free agency.

So it’s anyone’s guess how this situation will eventually play out…

    1. I was just thinking the same thing.
      Mariota to Seattle!
QBs can face each other for real!
Seattle will have mountains of $$$ getting out of Wilson’s contract (though we’ll miss him)
Our hearts will heal quickly with the amazing and overlooked talents of Mariota.
      Go Seahawks!

  1. Pretty simple fix if all the naysayers claim that he doesn’t have any trade value! Restructure his contract and gladly keep him on the roster so He & the Raiders can show the league how valuable it is to have a dual threat offense! I’m sure that he would be glad to be on a team that believes in his abilities… LMAO…..

  2. I think they should get rid of Mariota and maybe a key role player who didn’t necessarily have show up last year and make a way to have a respectable team this year the raiders are no longer respected in the division by fans teams are any of the above the real issue is riddick Carr had to grow into a strong leader yes alot of the problem is the defense but it goes both ways if you’re offense can’t stay on the field neither can the defense 🤠 better accuracy and ball security is his biggest problem under pressure he has scary instincts whenever it comes to clock management and company is in the area.

    1. Mariota is under contract so there is no dire need to make any irrational decisions. Carr is our Franchise QB and Mariota the backup.

Salary cap relief will be handled with other cost cutting transactions so there is no need to cut a talented QB who is still young and improving in Gruden’s system.

Let’s better address this off-season with players who are truly on the bubble.

  3. That’s a shame this dude is a professional and we the Raiders cant even get a 4th round pick this is what we all talk about it’s the front office that pays these guys all this money and they dont do nothing for the team.john n mayock need to go back to tv commentators n they could baily do that..LATER RAIDER NATION

    1. Sorry to say that i am @ a loss for words and ideas! This is a project that is headed nowhere fast! Don’t know if the franchise can ever match or catch KC and Ghargers are “”Coming”! Bronco an Vegas will bring up the rear for quite sometime! Die hard fan since teams inception and i have thrown in the “Towel”! There’s nothing being done there to give fans any hope! New Brass is needed “NOW”, TOP to BOTTOM! KC,s front office personel is light yesrs ahead and will be hard to Catch and Match!

  4. Tired on the blame being put on carr a dress the issue of the defensive problems first if he puts up 27 to 30 a game and we lose well the problem is obvious

  5. Mariota would be a good fit with the Seahawks now that Wilson is showing signs of discontent… both Quarterbacks that like to run and can throw the ball on a dime…

  6. Get rid of David Carr not Mariota David Carr is the issue he stinks and has not helped the Raiders at all.

  7. Funny they would think about trading a quality back up to Carr rather than restructuring his contract. The last time Carr went down with a broken leg the Raiders season died because the backup had not taken even one snap in a game.

    1. @BruceWeir , if you understood the NFL you would know Mariotta has the leverage and he also wants to be a starting QB not a backup. He has the leverage over the Raiders, there are several teams needing a starting QB and he is one of the best options out there for this off season cycle. Mariotta would be foolish to restructure his contract with the Raiders so he could stay in Vegas as a back up………. Ridiculous

  8. The problem isn’t DC. He has his flaws just like everyone else. Don’t you dare get rid of Marcus either. We have him time to heal and it showed. Jon Gruden has a powerful duo but he needs to figure out how to use them both together. We need to address the defense “now” in the offseason. We need a few veterans to show the new guys how it’s done. J.J. Watt, Richard Sherman and he’ll, we can also get OBJ or Juju. I’m just saying Raider Nation.

  9. Maybe if the Offensive Line in 2017, didn’t open up like the Red Sea for Moses and let Carr be Sacked and knocked down vs Washington more times in one game then then all of 2016, Carr wouldn’t be having the Problems He’s been having on the Field. Then again MAYBE bringing Gruden back when it looked like Del Rio had the team turning the corner and being a real Contender.

  10. Obviously you don’t know who the starting QB for the Raiders is! His name is Derek Carr, David is his brother who retired several years ago. 😂

  11. Sorry for the misunderstanding, my comment was directed to “Alex” posting about getting rid of David Carr, when David Carr is not even playing football anymore!

  12. I truly believe Richard Sherman can help our secondary get him! Stop blaming Carr, for defense and not getting off the field on 3rd and long! Offense score TD’s in the redzone NOT field goals …
