It was no secret that one of the teams the Bears were bidding against to acquire Khalil Mack was the Jets. The Raiders apparently didn’t prefer to send Mack to another AFC team, but based on a report in the New York Daily News, the Jets offer wasn’t far behind the Bears.
“The Jets’ aggressive offer for Mack included a 2019 first-round pick and 2020 second-round pick,” Manish Mehta reported Tuesday in The New York Daily News. “The package included additional compensation, but their willingness to part with those two premium picks – especially considering that they don’t have a 2019 second-rounder – revealed how much they wanted this guy.”
The Bears ended up giving a 2019 first-round pick, a 2020 first-round pick, a 2020 third-round pick, and 2019 sixth-round pick for Mack, but also received a 2020 second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2020 from the Raiders.
The Jets were willing to give up a first-round pick and a second-round pick, but Mehta confirmed that they were also offering additional compensation and it sounds like the Raiders may not have needed to include a second-round pick in any potential deal with the Jets.
As of now, the Jets (3-4) have a slightly worse record than the Bears (3-3), but neither team looks to be headed for a collapse. Considering the Raiders 2020 second-round pick will likely near the top of the second round, it will be interesting to see where the drafts picks shake out and which offer would have been the best value.
