Report: Mark Davis “Unhappy” With Compensation Raiders Received For 10th Pick

Mark Davis may have been happy with the Raiders draft, but according to a report on Monday, Davis wasn’t pleased with the compensation the Raiders received for the 10th overall pick.

Via The Athletic’s John Middlekauff:

“The only thing I will continue to harp on will be the compensation [the Raiders] got in the Kolton Miller trade. I heard from a league source that Mark Davis was unhappy with the return on the trade. Sources say he supported them trading back, he just expected them to get more in trading with a team in desperate need of Josh Rosen. The Raiders had the leverage.”

While it is true the Raiders didn’t get an overwhelming return on the trade, it was also well known who they were targeting with the 10th pick.

Teams already believed the Raiders wanted to trade out of the pick and when Roquan Smith and Mike McGlinchey were off the board, the Raiders didn’t have a lot to hide.

It’s possible the Raiders showed too much of their hand before the draft and the Cardinals were able to capitalize.

Considering the Raiders were reportedly planning to take Kolton Miller with the 10th pick, maybe they were fortunate a worse scenario didn’t play out as the third-round pick from the trade essentially produced Martavius Bryant.

In theory, it would have been interesting to see what the Raiders could have gotten from Arizona (or someone else) had they just drafted Josh Rosen with the 10th pick and held him for ransom.

Had the Raiders not been able to unload Rosen, he wouldn’t have been completely worthless. After a few quarters of being sandwiched by defenders running through and around Raider tackles, Carr would have needed someone to come in for him, right?

  1. Yeah I never know why the draft and stash for highest bidder doesn’t happen. I mean in theory you could get burned but I would think with all the QB neeedy teams in this draft, it could have worked. I can’t even remember any situation this has happened in the draft. Anyone???

  2. Knowing AZ has nothing for a QB is as bad as them knowing we wanted out of the 10 pick. We blinked. That was Cable running the draft board scared that Miller would be gone if we didn’t take the deal. It’s Cable’s desire to draft a ZBS T that cost us better compensation. How did AZ know we wanted Miller? Someone crapped the bed. We should have picked Vea at 10 and addressed LT in the 2nd round. We did get Bryant out of the deal and there wasn’t a receiver in the draft that can match Bryant. MD putting someone on notice and it ain’t Gruden. Changes are coming in the personnel ranks, not the coaching ranks.

      1. Lol…Gruden also said he’s taking the game back to 98’. We may not be runnig a ZBS this year but as Gruden said about the draft picks, “this is about the RAIDERS future, nothing to do with Donald Penn.” Coaches always say one thing and do another.

    1. Vea is not better than Hurst. Everything happens for a reason. We will find out 4 years from now. Why stress about something that is unnecessary at this point.

Raiders got the guys they wanted.

      1. Agree I watched one Vita Vea game and thought he gave half effort and took off too many plays! I’m a Rams fan but I really like the Raiders draft! I grew up in Sacramento and I hate the 49ers! I now live in Oklahoma and Marcel Ateman Wr could surprise not to mention the M Bryant trade with the Steelers! I love your guys coach and think your better days are ahead of you guys! You need to get back to those awesome Monday night games the Raiders used to play! Except of course the opening Monday night game against the the Rams ! Lol!

      2. We’ll know in 3 years. I saw Vea look better than Hurst on tape. O lineman are quicker and stronger in the NFL, Hurst’s bread and butter is his quickness. If it translates to NFL quickness than he will ball out, if not, he won’t. Vea is a beast of a man and still growing. He already translates to NFL strength. But as you say, why worry. We took Hurst and I’d rather be wrong thinking that Vea is better. I hope I’m wrong! GO HURST!!! BIG MO!!!

  3. Could’ve gotten more, but I like the big bookends!! NO INJURIES, & we’ll be there. Need a clean Carr!

  4. What’s worse is they dropped down 15 picks in the second round and got what-

  5. This is what happens when you let a coach have too much say. Let the GM do his his job or what’s the point of having a GM.

    1. But the GM is a disaster. He’s completely botched the last 3 drafts before this one. And remember in 2013, he traded back from #3 to #12 and only got a 2nd round pick. He should have gotten that AND the Dolphins first the following year. And with the #12 pick he drafted DJ Hayden and with the 2nd rounder from the Dolphins he drafted Menelik Watson. Both complete busts! Outside of 2014, Reggie McKenzie has been the worst GM in the NFL by far

    2. McKenzie has had his say & what has that gotten us? Bust after bust after bust.

  6. Need a left tackle.
DON’T forget who had Rosen standing.
More would have been nice, but you don’t want to mess around,
Especially when the first LT went with pick 9.

  7. Why do you guys care to believe what Middlekauff a well known “Raider Hater” being the source of this report. You see that he hasn’t said anything about the Niners, when they drafted a Right Tackle with nowhere the level of athleticism of Miller and who benefited from playing with the consensus best o-line prospect of the draft and coached by a now NFL coach.

  9. I’d love to see a systematic review with updated grades for the last 3 year’s drafts. Every once in a while someone publishes an article like that, but the point stands: you can only judge a draft a few years later– and few journalists do that.
Would be optimal for, say, three or four journalists covering different teams to do such a comparison together. Then, we’d get a realistic comparison of how McKenzie really did vs his colleagues.

  10. Please do a review with updated grades for the last 3 year’s drafts. We talk about “that’s the only way to judge a draft” yet few do so.
Would be awesome if you could get together journalists with three or four teams and do a side-by-side comparison. Give a realistic view of Raiders vs the others. (Perhaps the AFC West?)
Anyway, I’d love to see it.

  11. Arizona would have given up the seed to their stadium if Gruden & McKenzie had asked for it . As much as Oakland may have showed their hand before the draft started , Arizona showed theirs by seeking a trade when they did . They needed a QB and Rosen was there . A+B=C . The Raiders could have gotten a lot more compensation than they did. The Cardinals were over a barrel and the Raiders knew it . Why they let them off the hook , only they know . Mark Davis may not know much about football but he does know that his coach and his GM squandered an opportunity they won’t get back any time soon , even if Martavus Bryant turns out to be dynamic for them .

    1. And EVERYBODY knew the Dolphins were there slobering all over their selves with the next pick and were going to take Rosen. That’s why the cards had to get in front of them! I’m happy with Miller. But I must agree we got took! We should have gotten at least two #2’s!

  12. None of you idiots know what you’re talking about. You all pretend to be experts but if you knew anything you’d have a job working for a team.

  13. Also, it was stated that the Ravens were in on Kolton Miller at 16 sooo i dont see what the big problem is. I must admit i wasnt a huge fan at first of the Miller pick with so much defensive talent on the board but ..its easy to see WHY they drafted the way they did. Got a future LT and RT early, and addressed defensive needs in ABUNDANCE with ARDEN KEY and MAURICE HURST! As well as Hall and Nick Nelson who led ALL of college with 21! Passes defensed. If it was the Pats or Cowboys who picked Hurst and Key it would have been the most amazing draft of all time! Come on man….!

  15. The Very last thing we need in Raider Nation is to hear from the guy with the bad haircut!!!!! Who cares what he thinks!

  16. Who cares what MeddleKauf thinks honestly. If it would have been Patriots or GB or Pitt or Dallas who drafted Key and Hurst when they did. They would have been geniouses.
