Report Offers More Details on Raiders’ Decision to Trade Jakobi Meyers to the Jags

A report from Jacksonville this week offered a few more details on the Jakobi Meyers trade from the perspective of Jacksonville GM James Gladstone, who said the Raiders stood firm on their asking price on Meyers right up to the point of the deal.

“Gladstone… called general manager John Spytek last week to ask about Meyers. Meyers had told the Raiders he wanted to be traded,” Jags insider Ryan O’Halloran reported.

“‘It didn’t seem like they were really interested in doing anything,’ Gladstone [told O’Halloran]. ‘And then post-game (after the Jaguars’ win), I checked in with John to see if anything had changed based off where they were at from a record standpoint (2-6). They held firm on their stance and what they wanted. We were ultimately able to come to a spot where we were able to make an offer.’”

Gladstone’s comments were a good look for Raiders’ GM John Spytek, who needed to unload Meyers before the trade deadline if he wanted anything in return for him in the final year of his contract.

But on Friday, a few more details surfaced on the trade, and it sounds like the Raiders had more options on the table than what had previously been reported.

According to Chris Halicke of DK Sports Pittsburgh, the Raiders were sitting on an offer from the Steelers seemingly right up to their decision to trade Meyers to the Jaguars.

“The Steelers… were very much involved in the Jakobi Meyers sweepstakes,” Halicke reported on Friday.

“Though the exact offer isn’t known, what I do know is Khan made a similar offer to what the Jaguars paid the Raiders, a fourth- and sixth-round pick in 2026. That kind of stuff happens throughout the trade deadline. Moves are close to being done, and sometimes are even thought to be done, but fall apart at the last minute.”

If the Jaguars had not stepped in, it sounds like Spytek could have taken a similar deal with the Steelers. The Steelers own a later pick in the fourth round than what Jacksonville ultimately gave up, so that could have been the determining factor in the deal.

Whatever the case, Spytek was patient leading up to the trade deadline and his decision to slow play the Meyers trade ended up paying off.

Meyers will play his first game away from the Raiders this week when the Jaguars travel to the Texans on Sunday.

  1. I guess they want Spytek to feel good about something because his draft and team he help put together is one if not the worst in the league.

    1. There has been alleged insiders that have said Spytek didn’t have final say. I’m willing to give him a chance

  2. This was another stupid move by the Raiders! They paid Geno Smith all that money to throw interceptions abd didn’t want to pay Jakobi Meyers, that stupid! But then again it doesn’t surprise me after those idiots let go of alot of defensive players to get a bunch of bargain players that look like they are ready to be put into retirement homes. If you look at the defense they get burned everywhere the line sucks , the linebackers look like they don’t know what they are doing and finally the defensive back field are are who knows what they’re doing! The offensive line is in shambles, and I thought that wood be the first thing they would of fixed, but they brought in Alex Cappa and he’s ready for the glue farm. So who knows what the hell is going on with the Raiders. The best thing that can happen with the Raiders is for Mark Davis to sell the team to someone who knows football!

  3. If Spytek continues to select players like this year’s draft and FA acquisitions it won’t matter how many draft picks they collect. They need people that can spot and acquire talent. Spytek is making Gruden’s dismissal drafts look great!

  4. Your first mistake was letting AP go and young players go out of the locker room you passed on Jaxon Dart who is on his way to be Offensive Rookie of the Year, Genty won’t make a 1000 yards, here we are now back to the same old problem No QB and now u hear fire the coach fire the GM
When you should have kept AP Mark Davis needs to get his head out of his *** and bring AP back if he wants his job back and get a beeping quarterback
