Report: Raiders Weren’t Expecting Big Impact from 1st-Round Pick Tyree Wilson Until His Second Season

Tyree Wilson has been one of the most disappointing first-round picks in the draft this year, but according to a report this week, the Raiders weren’t anticipating a big rookie season from their highly touted edge rusher.

Prior to the season, a report suggested that Wilson might only be at around 80 percent when he returned to the field. The same report said Wilson could have reduced explosiveness and that his type of injury can linger for as long as a year.

Now that we’re well beyond the halfway point in the season (and Wilson continues to make very little impact in games), the best-case scenario for the Raiders is that he has been slowed this year by his foot…

Surely the Raiders were hoping for a little more from Wilson in his first season, but Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter talked this week about the team’s overall expectations for Wilson on his Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast

“When they picked Tyree Wilson, they knew he probably wasn’t going to be 100 percent or ready to really make an impact until next season. They knew he would play. They knew he would grow and get better, but their expectations were for next year. They were okay with that because they had [Malcolm] Koonce and they had Chandler [Jones], and there was some feeling there that they could bring Tyree around circumstantially and not have to rush him.”

The other detail working against Wilson is that he was considered to be one of the least-refined pass rushers to be taken at the top of the draft in many years.

That would have been the case even if his foot had been healthy.

So not only has Wilson been dealing with a foot issue, he also doesn’t have technique to fall back on. The 23-year-old’s bull rush isn’t as intimidating to offensive linemen in the NFL, and he doesn’t possess any effective counter moves at this early stage in his career.

Safe to say, the Raiders desperately need Wilson to have a healthy offseason and spend as much time as possible with Maxx Crosby or anyone else who can help him develop as a pass rusher going into his second season.

  1. Two years tops, teams now don’t want to take time and build a solid team, they want to win right now. This player only caught just 2 passes his first year, ever heard of Cliff Branch google it. Oh,by the way he’s in Canton now .

  2. That is a load of crap. You get drafted number 7 in the first round and your telling me you expect very little of him until year 2? Why didn’t you draft him in round 5? I don’t believe you, I’m pulling out the liar liar pants on fire card. You must think were all STUPID.

  3. Really, biggest fail in a while. We should have drafted Jalen Carter. 0 excuses…it’s also appalling that all the people that say “we couldn’t because of Ruggs” which makes 0 sense…but then these same people are all in on our dog abusing thug coach.

  4. Regardless of what is said ,by the team, more is expected from a player drafted so high. So far, this a failed draft pick by Ziegler or should the blame be on McDaniels for this one, too??? It’s a failed pick because the team didn’t have the luxury to draft a player so high and get basically nothing from him in year one.

  5. I’m totally OK with Wilson taking his time. Re injuring that foot would be a disaster.I would bet dollars to donuts Jimmy G pushed too hard & that has alot to do with his last performances? So let it heal, take this time to learn.Next season we expect alot more than what we seen this season!

    1. Have to say that now, yes.
But outside of MAXX we have a defensive team with no pass rush and bad run stop ability.

  6. You’d think they would have learned their lesson from drafting Clelin Ferrell so high and getting nothing in return for that loser then they go out and draft his copy Ferrell 2.0 .
Mark Davis is a clown to allow them to draft this imposter instead of Jalen Carter I would have taken that gamble on Carter any day over this hyped up clown Wilson .
Another waste of a 1st round draft pick .Why is this organization ran by a bunch of circus clowns from top to bottom .
Sell this team already Mark Davis go and make your crappy Rose wine with your sugar baby girlfriend .
You aint no Al Davis you can’t follow in your daddy’s footsteps .
Don’t cry over the stadium being usually 40 % or more visitor fans what did you honestly think was going to happen in Las Vegas collect your dough and shut up don’t pretend you give a …. about the organization or loyal fans .
Keep hiring loser coaches and keep drafting loser players see if you get any different results .
    INSANITY.
