Chip Kelly was fired by the Raiders on Sunday night and the cost the cut ties with Tom Brady’s hand-picked offensive coordinator isn’t going to be cheap.
It was reported almost a year ago that Kelly signed a contract worth $6 million per year, but until this week, the length of Kelly’s contract had not been discussed.
According to Las Vegas Review-Journal insider Vinny Bonsignore, Kelly signed a three-year deal (which is standard for coordinators) with the Raiders 10 months ago, which made him the highest-paid coordinator in the NFL.
“Chip Kelly [was] just 11 games into a three-year contract that was paying him $6 million a year. That’s the highest paid salary for an assistant coach,” Bonsignore said on the Vegas Nation First and 10 podcast this week.
As most coordinator contracts are fully guaranteed, the Raiders will be handing over $18 million to Kelly for one of the worst offensive coordinator efforts the league has ever seen.
For what it’s worth, $18 million is a number that should mean a lot to Geno Smith, too.
If Smith is released at the end of the season, he will be due the remainder of his $66.5 million guaranteed, and that amounts to $18 million, as well.
