ESPN’s Adam Schefter Responds to Question on Pete Carroll’s Job Security with the Raiders

Is Pete Carroll’s job as head coach of the Raiders suddenly not safe?

That’s the question ESPN’s Adam Schefter was asked after Chip Kelly was fired on Sunday night and the league’s top insider believes all options are on the table for the Raiders right now.

“Pete Carroll never fired an assistance coach in season in his entire time in Seattle. Now they fire two different coordinators here in about two plus weeks. They fired their special teams coach and now they fired Chip Kelly,” Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show on Monday.

“I think it’s clear, nobody seems to be safe right now out there on the coaching staff. I think everything is up in the air. I think the season has not gone in the way that a lot of people would have hoped. It’s been disappointing in a lot of different ways. You lose the Browns at home like that [and] give up 10 sacks, everything is going to be called into question.”

For the Raiders, Sunday’s loss stung in more ways that just the record.

Shedeur Sanders, who Tom Brady and company passed on seven times in the 2025 draft, looked like a viable option at quarterback for the Browns, and Geno Smith walked off the field after the game directing an obscene gesture at the Allegiant Stadium crowd.

Making matters worse for the Raiders, they have no intriguing backup quarterbacks on the roster unless sixth-round pick Cam Miller manages to surprise everyone at some point in the second half of the season.

If there was any good news involving Sunday’s game, it came in the form of draft position in the 2026 draft.

As of Monday, Tankathon shows the Raiders in line for the no. 5 overall pick in the draft.

With six games remaining on the schedule, the Raiders (2-9) have only one opponent left with a .500 record or below.

As of now, the New York Giants (2-10) have the no. 2 pick in the draft, and travel to Allegiant Stadium on December 28.

That could end up being a game with huge draft implications.

In all likelihood, Geno Smith will be released in the offseason, and there will plenty of talk around Fernando Mendoza (Indiana) and Ty Simpson (Alabama) potentially ending up in Las Vegas.

This time around, Brady, John Spytek, Mark Davis and whoever else is calling the shots in Vegas, desperately need to make the right decision at quarterback – and probably offensive coordinator, too.

  1. The Raiders have to fix the Offensive Line first. Any QB is going to look like trash with protection that poor.

  2. None of us are really going to hold our breath about getting the QB and OC right. It hasn’t happened in 23 years so why start now. As long as fans are dumb (or stubborn or whatever) enough to attend games then what’s the sweater?

  3. Draft best young QB. Hire Brian Daboll for OC. THEN USE $$120,000,000 on big talented O linemen get rid of these small ones and shift to power blocking. Should also draft for speed on DB’s

  6. Very strange how whenever we end up tied with a team at the end of the season the other team picks before us?
