Something Significant “Has to Happen” if Raiders Offense Doesn’t Improve this Week

If the Raiders don’t show improvement on offense this week against the Cincinnati Bengals, will head coach Antonio Pierce make the decision to do something drastic?

Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter talked about that possibility this week, and he believes the time for patience with the offense has reached its limit.

“I believe in [Antonio Pierce],” Hondo said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “But something has to happen to demonstrate we’re doing something to fix it. I’m not saying you should fire anybody, but something significant, if they lose tomorrow and this offense looks terrible, they have better do something quick, or it’s going to go bad to worse.”

Hondo’s guest on the podcast, Jonathan Schopp, added to the argument, pointing out that the next two months will go a long way toward shaping Pierce’s resume as a head coach.

With Tom Brady now part of the Raiders ownership group, Pierce probably has a little less job security than he did a few weeks ago, and he might need a strong finish to make his case for next year.

“This is not where Antonio Pierce thought he would be at the start of November, but he’s got to make a move. He’s being forced to make a decision that is going to impact the next phase of his career as a head coach,” Schopp said. “There needs to be some progress that is made. He may need to have more input of he may need to make a change in the direction that the offense is going.”

For what it’s worth, these aren’t the first rumblings about the need for change on offense.

Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy has taken a lot of criticism for this play-calling in the first 8 weeks of the season, and radio host ‘JT the Brick’ talked about the change he would make this week on the team’s flagship radio station.

“I think the play caller needs to be changed as of now, whoever they want to do [it],” JT said on his Raider Nation Radio show on Monday. “I think there’s going to be some changes being made that could make some of the games more competitive.”

With the bye week coming after the Cincinnati game, the logical timeline for a major adjustment on offense would be next week.

    1. Hell yeah!! Stop thinking your smarter then everyone else Raiders. That old school BS isn’t working for anyone.

  1. Getsy was an awful hire. He was awful with Chicago. I have no idea why the Raiders even considered him.

We had Chip Kelly practically volunteer to run the offense and we didn’t consider him.

We had Kingsbury ready to go and didn’t want to give him an extra year in the contract.

Either one of them would have been miles better than Luke Getsy.

Antonio Pierce shouldn’t get a pass for hiring him, either. This is on him as much as anyone.

    1. The raiders looked at home because their top option backed out AND Admas vouched for him. I’m not sure how y’all consider yourselves fans without actually knowing what the hell happened

  2. Yes the offense is putrid. Pass, run, blocking allow it. This is what happens when you get rid of an actual NFL QB, RB,WR and change the offensive philosophy to a failed OC. There were 2 things that needed to happen in the off-season 1. Better OC 2. Better QB. Tom Telesco and A.P. failed on those two objectives. Once they didn’t get an upgrade at QB in the 1st round TT should’ve been selling DA for multiple mid-round picks for 2024 and 2025. I still can’t believe AP went into this year thinking Luke Gutless Getsy and the “gardner” Minshew are going to lead us. Once again this falls on both TT and AP. Get rid of AP at the end of year and go get Ben Johnson as HC/OC. And let him chose his GM and then his QB in the draft.

  3. I sincerely believe Antonio Pierce did not want to bring in Luke Getsy to be part of his coaching staff. Something else is going on behind the scenes in the Raiders organization.

  4. Pierce better smell the roses soon. Being head coach comes with difficult challenges. One being the firing of assistant coaches. Luke Getsy should have been replaced a couple of weeks earlier. If things remain the same not only will Luke be gone but so will Pierce. Another assistant who has had plenty of time to change the defense is Graham. Stopping the run has been difficult for the Raiders and so has putting pressure on the opposing QB.

  5. When it’s 1st or 2nd and goal on the 3 yd line instead of running 3 or 4 straight times and straight up the guard or tackle slot
Instead try a short pass to the tight end ala what the Chiefs do with Kelcey.

  6. I believe this offense is no longer pumped up and excited as they were ending last season. It’s as although the courage they once had is severely diminished. For example, the team is in the red zone with a yard or 2 for a touch down and rather than force their will on utilizing several QB sneaks to score, they try ineffective run and passing plays.

In addition, why not use double TE’s more. They have 2 very good ones. The line is’nt opening up holes for the RB’s enough.

Lastly, the QB needs to be be more mobile, especially when the OL doesn’t seens to be ineffective in picking up blitzes.

AP, get this team excited and feeling wild again! Go for it !!!

  7. Something absolutely must happen with our team! We have been bad for too long. Play calling is ridiculous! Maybe Gruden needs a second chance? I hate to say this but Davis may need to listen to Tom Brady closer. (Never thought I would say that!!!)

  8. I miss the real Raiders, the Raiders of the 20th century. I feel sorry for the players who had hoped to be on a contender. Oh well, at least they are getting paid 6 figures.
