In a matter of hours, Antonio Pierce went from the ultra-popular head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders to one of the most scrutinized head coaches in the league.
That’s the way it goes in the NFL, and it didn’t help that Pierce’s decision to punt on 4th and 1 in the fourth quarter seemed to seal the team’s demise.
Tony Romo called the game on the CBS broadcast and his message to Raider fans after the loss was to be patient with Piece.
“I wouldn’t worry about the Raiders,” Romo said. “Antonio Pierce is for real. I’ve played against him [and] communicated with him a bunch since he took over last year.”
“I think he’s outstanding almost each area that you want your head coach,” Romo continued. “He has the ability to communicate with the players at a very high level. He has a standard that he sets that they follow. His players play as hard as any team that you’ll see on tape. You’ll see that again today. They had too many turnovers. I think that cost them right when they were in position to extend the lead and, to me, there were a lot of positives there, but they didn’t get the [win]… the Raiders are going to be fine. They’re just going to have to win some of the close ones.”
The Raiders have a lot to figure out between now and next week when they travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens.
The Raiders quarterback situation wasn’t particularly encouraging on Sunday and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy is going to fall out of favor with the fans quickly if the offense doesn’t improve in the weeks ahead.
It’s only one game, but time isn’t a commodity for most NFL coaches. The pressure will be on Pierce, Getsy and the entire offensive staff to transform the offense into a competent group next week in Baltimore.

Hilarious đ
Raiders are trash and won’t be better this season regardless of what Tony says
Tony Romo? How many rings does he have?
We knew the Taiders offense would be plain vanilla when Davis and Telwsco hired Getsy. Add to that an unsure appearing Minshew (perhaps feeling the pressure of intense scrutiny playing in a Raidersâ market on semi national tv) and you get ordinary offense. As expected but worsened by too many turnovers and timid 4th and 1 play calling with a close game on the line where Herbert and his team were also meson offense. Nothing new. Patience tempered with constant week to week, game to game improvement.
Harbaugh out coached Pierce when it mattered, the second half. The Chargers will become a tough, smart, hard-nosed team under Harbaugh. Something I wished my team, the Raiders, would become!
Yeah REALLY DISAPPOINTED, The Raider way was, no prisoners, and this whole conservative BS today was exactly THAT! You want to survive in the HEAD COACH position, ball out homie!
As a long time, Raider’s fan living in Illinois and having watched the Chicago Bears not sure about Luke Getsy. For all the weapons on offense we have better play calling is needed.
The offense was incredibly predictable which is not a problem if your OL and DL dominate. It’s a single game and the team must move on. I was not in favor of Minshew, but fans don’t make that call. Next week I am sure coach will have the team ready.
The Raider Nation is eager for victory.
Hard to win in the NFL with 2 backup And and no real QB1. As soon as they get one the Raiders will be hard to beat. Till then AP will figure out the rest. He’ll be just fine.. Liked him as a LB with the Giants years ago. I’m a Chiefs fan looking forward to seeing our rivalry mean something to the rest of the league.
Youâre going to have to wait another week before you have a realistic chance at victory because itâs highly unlikely that they get a win against Baltimore.
As a student of the game, I am not a fan or in favor of Minshew being the starting QB for the Raiders base upon AOC play of last season and their record (5 wins 4 losses). I’ll reserve my Intel on Minshew for another day.
P. S. Go Raiders
It’s not easy beating a Harbaugh, especially one that just lost a game.
By the way, watching both Romo & Brady in the booth, it’s no contest. Brady is the GOAT on the field, but he’s no Romo in the booth.
Typical of the raider’s to be ununited in who should be quarter back, A.O’d. should have started,he’s already familiar with the team, the coach made a bad decision on this, I’ve been a raider fan longer than he’s been coaching and definitely keep up with the raiders. Hopefully Adrian O’Donnell will start soon so we can start winning games!! #goraiders
Absolutely agree!!! This game was poorly coached on both sides of the ball!! When will the Raiders learn to put a real offensive line on the field??? Geez!! I’ve been a die hard Raider fan for over many years, and remember when they were tough and knew how to play the game to win!! They’ve lost that. I want it back!7 but
The one thing Antonio could’ve learned from Jack del Rio and gruden is you have to take risks sometimes to win! Games are not like a cookie cutter, there will be different situations in each! Listen to your fans ! We love you and we love the game if you had taken a risk and it failed at least you showed you have heart! Now on to game 2!
Every team except the Raiders runs play action. It’s always been that way.
Pierce did imo the most damaging thing a hc could do. Three times he went for 4th and 1 and with the play calling failed. Then with possibly the opportunity to win, choked and sent a message to his offense that he had no faith in them. That to me as a player, you have lost my faith in you as someone that I would give my 110%. I’m just one fan and it’s my opinion. My level of support for Pierce as a fan and having played the game has decreased. A hc no matter what should never show his team that he has no faith in his team. If a coach doesn’t believe in his team how can he expect or demand that the team believe in him, his staff and his system. Just my opinion and I stand on it.
Offensive play calling was horribly inconsistent. In some series just plain awful.
As usual, the play calling is so predictable. The player talent exceeds the coaches abilities. A coach should never send a message of I don’t believe in my team. He will never reclaim the respect and admiration from the team. Coaches ask you to buy into their philosophy but at a most crucial moment, the coach shows no confidence in the same players that he wants to put their all into his system and staff. Bad, bad move COACH.
Right, but if you can’t run the ball, you can’t open up the passing game. I’m blown away that everyone on here doesn’t realize how poorly the o-line played. how do the 49ers plug in a nobody and he runs for 147?
After 40+ years of this kinda stuff, going on with this team. I a’m almost considering. Blassting my Raider tattoo off, and replacing it with a Browns tattoo. That way I could justify the sorry a** losing every year…..
But I would never, Raider fan for life even though it’s hard.
Itâs time for the Raiders to make serious moves to get a veteran mobile QB otherwise itâs going to be da same old song of losing just sick of it period,
Was minschew the right call if youâre going to be conservative at least go with qb who is more accurate thatâs OâConnell. If there are no qb option plays being called go with the better pocket passer
Minshew threw for 12 first downs, 76% completion rate, 257 yards, all with no running game. He made one bonehead play. Was sacked 4times, which leads me to believe Aidan would have been sacked a few more times. Remember last year ?Khalil sacked him 6 times alone.
People, get behind Gardner, he’s the qb. He also was the best choice. Didn’t I read he had the most completions in the NFL through the first 2 games. He’s going to take this team to the playoffs. Support him 100%. It’s a long season. There will be ups and downs, but the Raiders are playoff bound.
“Playoffs?” Remember Jim Mora’s famous quote? I would love to see it, but it ain’t gonna happen with this o-line.
I won’t turn on Pierce or the Raiders after just one loss, but Getsy does need to develope more of an imagination. I won’t second guess the decision to punt on 4th and one. If we didn’t get the 1st down, it would have been game over, giving them an easy field goal, at the very least. Our Defense was playing pretty good all day, so punting it was as good a call. It does no good to keep switching up personel. I say we stick with Minshew….for now. It’s going to take patience Raider Nation. If we can make improvements as we go along, and the Raiders don’t turn on each other, we’ll be alright. We need to stop the turn overs, make more 1st downs, move the ball, score more points, and give our Defense more rest. Stay the course Raiders, and don’t turn on each other.
The gm was the wrong guy this guy couldn’t get it done in LA with a good team in the Chargers. Then he comes here and let’s Jacobs walk away! This QB is not the answer!!! O’CONNELL needs to start we should have rolled with what was working last year and build from there, continue with the rebuild after the debacle of McDaniels
This is why Tom Telesco should never had been hired. Gardner Minshew, nuff said. Other QBs that were available and better J. Fields, B. Mayfield, S. Darnold, J. Brissett, J.Flacco, K.Cousins. Heck I’d even throw Z.Wilson, M.Jones, J.Winston, R.Wilson in as well. Not resigning J.Jacobs and on and on. Also, would you rather have Baker at QB or C.Wilkins at DT?
That’s any easy one, C. Wilkins at DT! Baker Mayfield is slightly better than Minshew. He isn’t a franchise QB, that’s why he’s bounced around the league.
No Minshew is not taking the Raiders to the super bowl. However it’s hard to throw when the defense knows you can’t run the ball, and you get pressured most attempts. The o-line stunk pure and simple.
You need to go back to the drawing board with that list , while I agree manchew is the wrong fit for the team , the alternative also suck. Everyone’s freaking out like as if they thought the raiders were Superbowl bound, realistically they are a year and a good draft away from p.o. contention and the world isn’t ending . They will workout the problems over the course of the season and LA usually takes one game a year from the raiders. Everyone that is talking about jumping ship should just do it now if that’s all it takes
Big Mistake leaving California… California is RAIDER NATION… long time Oakland Raiders Fan even with that long road trip to L.A. something about the name Oakland Raiders sounds like a fit that and it’s where the team was born… plus it don’t even feel like home field advantage… Oakland has the Best Home Fans in the NFL … and now they want brady part owner what’s really going on… money greed or both… have to admit the mayor’s of Oakland Sucks a Big one . A New Stadium would have brought a Super bowl to the City. MAYBE THE TEAM OWNER AND MAYORS OF OAKLAND SHOULD VISIT THE WIZARD HE GAVE THE SCARECROW A BRAIN. MAYBE HE CAN HELP THEM TOO . GLAD FOR THE TIME I GREW UP… OAKLAND RAIDERS…
Raider fan 40 plus! Play raider football! None of this conservative bs!
Raider fan by choice, raider fan till yes it’s only the first game and we do need to make some minor adjustments we need to have faith in our coach and his decision making as a player I feel he knows what it’s like to be in the trenches but the coaching staff also needs a swift kick in the rump to get him kick started, if you’re uncertain or scared as a fan then get off the bus and those who stay on, let’s Ride this mother to a win go raiders go raider Nation
Agree 100%, why are the Raiders the only team in the league that can’t run play action, even when they had Jacobs.
Why are people picking on Gardner. 25 out of 32. One turnover. No protection. No running game. He just needs some help and momentum. He was actually the best part of the offense.
The O-Line was a big part of the problem last year it was never fully addressed , no time to throw the ball down field , no open holes for the running game to get going ,Tom Telesco at fault for this , Bad 4th and 1 call , missed field goal, Fumble by white and Minshew
