AFC West Rumor Mill: Andy Reid to Retire at the End of the Season?

The Raiders and Chargers are both in the process of finding their next head coach and an interesting rumor popped up on Thursday about another AFC West team that could have a head-coaching vacancy in the days ahead.

According to NBC Sports host Mike Florio, there are rumors in NFL circles right now that Andy Reid might be planning to retire at the end of the season…

“The one I’m watching is when the Chiefs season ends, is Andy Reid going to retire? He has said he’s not thinking about it… but I think there’s reason to believe the Chiefs have the possibility on their radar screen. We’ll find out when the season ends.

A lot of times a guy keeps his mouth shut until it’s all said and done. He doesn’t want to be the story. He doesn’t want to be the focal point. He doesn’t want it to be the issue. Although I could say at some level, the closer they get to the Super Bowl, if guys start thinking Andy Reid would walk away, that gives them the extra little kick to let him walk out with a trophy.

Ever since I caught wind of the possibility that the Chiefs are bracing for Reid leaving, not saying he will, but I think there’s reason to believe the Chiefs have it on their radar screen… if you’re one of these great coaches with options, you kind of want to play it out, and maybe on some level you’re kind of hoping that they lose sooner than later because you don’t want to ride this all the way out to February 11 if the Chiefs make it to the Super Bowl.”

As Florio pointed out, if Reid is planning to retire, the Chiefs might actually put themselves at a disadvantage by going deeper into the playoffs (which they would obviously be fine with).

Teams like the Raiders should, in theory, have an advantage over playoff teams in their search for a head coach. That being the case, the Chiefs could be out of the playoffs in two days and the Raiders still haven’t named a head coach.

Antonio Pierce is considered the frontrunner for the Raiders’ job, but for reasons that no one seems to be able to report on, nothing has been finalized… and anything can still happen.

  1. Finally gonna take care of his family and that screw up of a son. He should have taken time off after the accident.

  2. Building a strong culture within an organization is an ongoing process. As the clock keeps ticking and a coach has not been named the Raiders are falling further and further behind other organizations. What gives?
