Beat Writer Explains Why He Questions Raiders Coaching on Offense

It’s the last week of October, and once again, it looks like the Raiders are going to be out of the playoff conversation by November.

Injuries and inconsistent play have led to the team’s early-season collapse, but the most obvious issue leading to the Raiders’ 2-5 start has been a borderline incompetent offense.

The offense under offensive coordinator Luke Getsy had not been able to build an identity and Gardner Minshew is having, by far, the worst season of his NFL career.

No one seems to know how to fix the offense, and sound bites from Getsy are getting harder to buy into each week.

“I think the inconsistencies [on offense] are dissipating. I really do,” Getsy told members of the media at Thursday’s press conference.

“I think every week it just gets a little better and better,” Getsy continued. “I think the mindset, the understanding of what the objective is, is getting clearer each and every week, and running the football alleviates a lot of those issues. Whether you’re trying to spread it around or live we’re having the issue with turning the ball over, all of that goes into play and I think that’s a part of it, and I think you just have to believe in what you’re doing, stick with the plan, keep driving the objective of major sure all 11 on the field are on the same page all the time and that’s really the answer.”

The words sound good from Getsy, but whatever improvements he is talking about haven’t had any impact on the results in recent weeks.

So what is the problem with the Raiders’ offense?

No one in the building seems to know, but Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter shared a logical explanation this week.

“Years ago, Bobby Bowden, the legendary West Virginia [coach], and of course, most people know him from Florida State, and I [were] having lunch, and we had a long discussion about a lot of topics,” Hondo said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “But one of the topics we talked about was, I asked him, ‘How can I be a better analyst as a media member covering sports?’”

“He told me something I’ll never forget,” Hondo continued. “He said, if one or two players is playing poorly, then you can point a finger to the player. But when all of them are, or multiples are, and it continues over just more than a one game. He said [then] you have to look at coaching. I’m taking his words, and I think right now, everybody on that offensive staff has to be getting a long, hard look at, and that starts with [Luke] Getsy, doesn’t it?”

  1. Gets was a bad hire front he start. I cringed when I found out the Raiders hired him. He was awful in Chicago.

Frustrating part for me was we had Kingsbury and let him go and then Chip Kelly offered to run the offense for us.

Either one of them would have been miles better than what we have now.

The real blame should go to Antonio Pierce since he was the one who brought Getsy on.

  2. Getsy will never be successful As an offensive coordinator in the NFL. He failed in Chicago and he’s going to fail here.

  3. I have to agree. Getsy just isn’t a good coach. There was a reason why the Bears fired him. The Chicago offense just did not develop. By that they meant the quarterback Justin Fields. Also, that zone blocking scheme of his. I don’t ever remember it working for the Raiders. Even when Cable was here, they were running a gap blocking scheme because of Olsen, who was the OC. This Raiders team needs new coordinators for both offense and defense. Graham thinks like a 3-4 coach when scouting D-linemen. Zach Carter is the latest example.

  4. I wonder how many turnovers is Minshew going to give us this Sunday. He sure enough leads the league in turning the ball over himself. When the Epsys come next year, they should give him a trophy for the most turning the ball over

  5. Everyone needs to be getting looked at. This was a travesty to roll a career journeyman out as your 1st option QB. Telesco did nothing to truly improve the QB room thru free agency or the draft. Also, everybody knew what Luke Getsy was. A failed OC with at least a talented QB that didn’t always find the right guy. AP has left his head coaching gig to a failure of an OC and a failure of a QB. That’s either on him or Telesco. All need to be removed at the end of season for a more competent GM,HC,OC,QB. Get Ben Johnson and whomever he wants for GM. He has proven to be able to make lemonade with what he has done with Goff. Leave the crappy announcer outside the decision making area along with Al’s kid.

  6. So many coaches and quarterback changes every year will lead to inconsistency on the field and mindset. OAKLAND a blue-collar football city where the fans and team work and play hard. Most of all your not coming in our town and our house without a fight . Lost Vegas where the other team and their fans make themselves at home… that never ever happened in Oakland… greed and incompetent ownership showed it’s ugly face when it was decided to move out of state… Stop pretending and get Richie back . He’s got players playing. I don’t know who’s MD’s advisors are but there making a fool out of him as an owner and waisting money… sell the stadium to the A’s you’ll make your money back in time… like Tower of Power Back to Oakland… those were the days good music good fans and a Great RAIDER team… that was a fumble Greg beaker and Charles woodson made the play… tuck rule my Butt …

  7. Wrong. It starts with Mark Davis, who has no business making HC decisions. They should have followed the league trend of hiring a good young OC, as HC. Pierce looks inept and the results are telling.
