NFL Insider Names His Early Favorite for Raiders’ Head Coach in ’26

The Raiders are early in the process of finding their next head coach, but is there a front runner for the job already in the mix?

There hasn’t been a lot reported on the coaching candidates who have met with the Raiders, although Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter did say the team came away impressed by Davis Webb.

“Davis Webb, who is the 30-year-old passing game coordinator for the Broncos, interviewed the other day with the Raiders, and late last night I got some great feedback on the interview. It was told that it was not good. It was phenomenal,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast last week.

“I would just say this, I think the Raiders were very pleasantly surprised. I’m not predicting he’s going to get a second interview, but it would not shock me at all. I asked the person I spoke to, do you think [there] is going to be a second interview? And their exact words were, ‘Wouldn’t be surprised.’ That was exactly how they worded it.”

Carpenter doesn’t have Davis as his current favorite to get the job in Las Vegas, but one of his colleagues at Sports Illustrated does.

Long-time insider Albert Breer offered his predictions for each head coaching job around the league on Thursday, and he said he is learning toward Webb going to the Raiders.

“He has the presence. He has the personality to reach players. He’s just a really unique guy and I think the football people in Denver would tell you his football acumen is where it needs to be so I think Davis would make a lot of sense for [the Raiders],” Breer said of the fit in Las Vegas for Webb.

“I think it would make some sense if it was Davis Webb. I think it would be a gamble, of course.”

On Friday, Raider Nation Radio host Q Myers talked about Breer’s report, and he placed a lot of stock into Breer’s comments, noting that Breer was one of the first insiders to link Josh McDaniels to Las Vegas in 2022.

“Albert Breer [at] The Monday Morning Quarterback, a guy that I got a lot of respect for, He believes that Broncos quarterback coach, Davis Webb, is going to end up landing that Raiders head coaching job,” Myers said on the Locked on Raiders podcast.

“Remember, the Raiders have multiple guys from the Denver organization in the front office. So I like to pass that along because Albert Breer is a guy that’s pretty plugged in. He knows what he’s talking about. He’s not just pulling something out of his backside, throwing it against the wall and hoping it sticks. That’s not his style, right? Whenever he says something, it’s usually because he’s hearing something.”

It could still be another week or two before Tom Brady and company settle on a head coach, but there is definitely some smoke around Webb, and he will be a name to keep an eye on as the process continues to play out in Las Vegas.

Webb blew away Sean Payton in his interview with the Broncos in 2023…

Prior to the season, league insider Ari Meirov listed Webb as his top head coaching candidate in the NFL under 40 years of age and made a huge impression on Broncos’ head coach Sean Payton in his initial interview.

“He’s on a rocket ship,” Meirov said about Davis in September.

“I’ll say it right now, when he becomes a head coach, I hope you guys heard it from me first, but his rise is remarkable. He transitioned from that backup role and the way he ended up in Denver is the story I love the most. When Sean got hired in Denver… he was running to fill out his staff and he was looking for a quarterbacks coach and he was just going through the process and he was like, ‘You know what, I’ll interview a bunch of guys, but I’ll probably hire one of these guys that I know from New Orleans.’”

“He interviews Davis Webb as part of the process and Davis Webb blows him away,” Meirov continued. “It was the most impressive interview that he did throughout the entire process, regardless of what position it was, and he hired Davis Webb on the spot. Ever since then, Davis Webb has had a vital role in Denver. Of course, we saw what Bo Nix did last year. He’s a very, very big part of that, of course, being the quarterbacks coach.”

“There were a number of teams who were trying to hire Davis Webb this offseason. He got a promotion to also becoming the passing game coordinator in his title, but this is somebody who in the preseason, the first preseason game versus Arizona, Sean Payton gave him play calling responsibilities. He was awesome at it.”

  1. I think the Raiders are going to have to guarantee a hefty sum to lure any decent coach, otherwise we get the whatever is left. That’s just the repercussions of running a clown show the last 5 years. A younger first time head coach will be cheaper, but his agent will set something up to to give him security. Us old guys remember Mike Shanahan, another bright young coach we were first to give an opportunity to. He brought too much change, and the veteran players complained to the old man, quit on the young coach. He had guaranteed payout, I don’t think the AD ever paid him the balance of his contract.

  2. Anyone that would rather have Mendoza over Manning, because we could get either if we trade this pic, needs to really get a clue. Who do you think is going to win the Heisman next year? If you think anybody other than Manning, you really need to get a clue. We don’t need another check down Charlie that operates out of a shotgun..

      1. He really was on fire against Miami wasn’t he??? Woooo hooooo
        YAWN.
Check down Charlie with what? 190 yards with almost half YAC? 16 for 28??
The guy fails at the next level unless the team tailors the offense and averages 150 rushing a game.
And out of the shotgun, NOPE.
        First pick??? Total lunacy

  3. Ameer Abdullah, Josh Jacobs, Davante Adams, Robert Spillane, Demico Autry, Jacobi Meyers all did well for other teams, this year. These players were not the problem, Raiders “leadership” ( or more accurately the lack thereof) was. Tre Tucker’s and Michael Mayer’s “problems” are the Raiders organization, most specifically offensive line and inept quarterback play. If anyone doubts this then watch them go to another team and be productive. The Raiders need, in addition to a competent offensive line, veteran quarterback depth, namely Malik Willis as the starter, Joshua Dobbs as the backup and a rookie who won’t be under pressure to start immediately. That’s how you add competent depth at this position.

Zamir White, Dillon Laube, Tyree Wilson, Kenny Pickett, Geno Smith and Adian O’Connell all need to be let go. Additionally, it wouldn’t hurt to address the (not so) Special teams. The offensive line and Special Teams coaches could use a serious upgrade. It seems that we are stuck with the guys who call themselves “Raiders Management,” so let’s see how they, this year, address last year’s “team” that they put on the field. No matter what they do, all the sportswriters will talk about is how things are looking up, until the team actually starts playing games.

    1. Can we add Kolton Miller to the list of people who the Raiders should let go ? Overrated and not reliable. See ya.

  4. Mendoza will never be a top ten NFL Q. He can’t stretch defenses. He threw less than 30 passes over 20 yards his entire college career. And completed like three or four.
    And he’s a shotgun Q.
Check down Charley all over again.
Manning’s last three games were better better still best in the peach bowl.
Did you know he runs a sub 4.4 40?
