Davante Adams Explains How Josh McDaniels’ System Held Back the Raiders’ Offense

The Raiders $100 million offense ended up being the weakness of the team this year, and Davante Adams offered an explanation this week to why the season played out that way.

Appearing on the Two G’s in a Pod podcast, Adams said the scheme brought to the Raiders by Josh McDaniels required an elite quarterback to “nickel and dime” and “hit on every cylinder” consistently…

“We couldn’t be consistent enough on offense to be a playoff-level team. We definitely had the pieces. In my opinion, I think it’s going to be a whole new year next year. The system itself made it hard enough for us to succeed. You need a Tom Brady or an Aaron Rodgers to go in there and have your quarterback hit on every cylinder that consistently. That offense is just a nickel and dime offense…

I feel like based on what we have personnel wise, we could have done a lot better, but the scheme itself kind of held us back. We worked with what he had and we definitely didn’t execute the best that we could have at all times. Next year with a little bit of a different scheme on offense mixed with what we have personnel wise, I think we’ll be able to unlock a different version of our team.”

Going forward, it will be interesting to see who Antonio Pierce hires to take over the Raiders’ offense.

Based on an NFL Network report on Friday, Pierce is not going to keep many offensive coaches from McDaniels’ staff and one name that has been linked to the Raiders is former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Ian Rapoport on Twitter: “First task for #Raiders coach Antonio Pierce: Address the offensive side of the ball, as most coaches won’t be retained.Interim OC Bo Hardegree leaves Las Vegas with plenty of play-calling experience, helping this offense and its young QB thrive late this season. Now available. / Twitter”

And on a final note, does it sound like Adams wouldn’t be upset moving forward with Aidan O’Connell at quarterback?

Assuming that doesn’t happen, Davante also mentioned Kirk Cousins as a quarterback that he has a lot of respect for – which might be something to keep in mind as the Raiders enter the offseason as a strong candidate to make an aggressive move for a quarterback.

  1. For me the way I’d approach the QB situation is do whatever you can to move up in the draft to get either a Caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels and let Aiden battle it out. I’d prefer not to rehash QB’s from other teams. Let’s build something here with a QB that grows into being a Raider with no preconceived notions from other organizations

  2. I agree with D.Adams. Of all of the available veteran quarterbacks, one who can make all of
throws is Kirk Cousins. Cousin’s is a dog. A tough quarterback. With offensive weapons like
    D. Adams and Jacobi Meyers out wide, with M.Mayer at tight end running the crease routes,
and with Josh Jacobs and Z. White, Amir Abdullah, and the other backs. If the Raiders can
improve their offensive line to give K. Cousins time. And with Aidan O’connell backing up,
the offense might present a lot problems in the NFL.

  3. Thank you Mark Davis for Antonio Pierce , Devante Adams knows what’s happening, Aiden Oconnell was hitting everybody on the button and they were dropping it the last few games, pick up some third round quarterbacks to back them up, just win baby

  4. Davante Adams played like crap all year despite what he says about the offense being nickel and dime. Adams had more trouble blocking and catching passes then catching a cold. As for AP and the offense next season! Lol! It will be a disaster and failure just like AP himself. Emotion only gets you so far.

    1. Cody, how is AP a failure? Looked good at coach when he took over, and he won a SB as a player…where you seeing failure?
