Derek Carr: “[Ruggs] Needs People to Love Him Right Now… If Nobody Else Will Do It, I’ll Do It”

For the second time in less than a month, the Raiders are navigating a disaster.

In October, the Gruden emails rattled the building, but that situation was barely a tremor compared to the horrors of Tuesday, November 2. No one could have been prepared for the damage and loss of life caused by Henry Ruggs.

Just as they did a month ago, the Raiders have turned to Derek Carr and interim head coach Rich Bisaccia to guide the team through their latest impossible situation. Both handled questions well on Wednesday, though one of Carr’s statements particularly stood out.

“To the family, to all the families involved, no one ever wants to see this, whether it’s a football player or not, you never want to see something like this happen. It broke my heart,” Carr said.

But then Carr showed support for his friend.

“I haven’t reached out [to Ruggs],” Carr continued. “I will always be here for him. That won’t change. I’ll prove that to him. Not to anybody else. But he needs people to love him right now. He’s probably feeling a certain type of way about himself right now and he needs to be loved. If nobody else will do it, I’ll do it.”

One of the reasons the Ruggs’ situation will be so difficult to navigate is that he was, and still is, a young person loved by his teammates. The Nevada legal system will eventually come down hard on him and the court of public opinion might never relent from it’s judgment – and maybe justifiably so.

But at a time when it’s not morally acceptable by everyone to show concern for Ruggs, Carr couldn’t have been more eloquent in his empathy for everyone involved in Tuesday’s horrific accident.

It’s anyone’s guess how the Raiders’ season will play out from here, but it’s easy to see how Carr’s leadership has been so well-received to this point. After hearing him speak on Wednesday, maybe don’t rule out the team responding in the best way possible to its latest impossible situation.

  1. I too was young, dumb, invincible and a Marine. There, but for the grace of God, could have been me. It’s a horrible event for all who will live with this for the rest of their lives. HR III made a mistake and will be judged and punished by man and God. All we can do is pray for the families, and Henry too.
