Derek Carr is entering only his fifth season in the NFL, but he is on the brink of breaking a few of the Raiders most significant passing records – many of them by next year.
Here are the record holders and what it will take for Carr to pass each.
Passing yards (Ken Stabler) – Carr currently has 14,690 career passing yards and ranks fourth on the Raiders all-time list behind Stabler (19,078) , Rich Gannon (17,585) and Daryle Lamonica (16,655). With 4,389 passing yards in 2018, Carr would top the list.
To this point in his career, Carr has never thrown for more than 4,000 yards in a season – a feat that would have been accomplished in 2016 (3,937) had he not broken his leg.
Touchdowns (Ken Stabler) – Carr’s 103 career passing touchdowns ranks fourth on the Raiders all-time list. Stabler (150), Lamonica (148), and Gannon (114) own the top three spots. It’ll take 48 touchdowns for Carr to pass Stabler.
Only three quarterbacks in history have thrown for 48+ touchdowns in a season (Peyton Manning twice, Tom Brady, and Dan Marino).
It’s worth noting that Carr ranks 10th on the Raiders list for career interceptions with only 44.
Completions (Rich Gannon) – Carr is third on the Raiders all-time list with 1,378. He trails only Gannon (1,533) and Stabler (1,486). It will take just 155 completions next season for Carr to surpass Gannon.
Rating (Rich Gannon) – Quarterback ratings can move up and down, but only Gannon (91.2) has a better career passer rating than Derek Carr (87.5). The next quarterback behind Carr is Jeff Hostetler at 82.1.
Completion Percentage (Rich Gannon) – Another statistic that moves up and down. Only Gannon (62.6) has a better completion percentage in a Raiders uniform than Carr (61.3).
Game-winning drives (Ken Stabler) – Derek Carr has 13 career game-winning drives. Only Ken Stabler (17) and Jim Plunkett (14) have done it more in a Raiders uniform.
Stabler did it 130 career games, Plunkett in 70, and Carr in 62.
It’s worth noting that Stabler had a career record of 69-26-1 with the Raiders. He wasn’t losing enough to need to come back as often.
Speaking of record, it’s an area that Carr will gladly hope to improve upon this year. He has 28 career wins – good for 9th on the Raiders all-time list.
Carr’s 45.1% career win percentage is 9th-best among quarterbacks with at least 20 games in a Raiders uniform – a statistic owner Mark Davis paid Jon Gruden $100 million to address.
