Not Ideal: Former Raiders’ Cornerback was Eagles’ Highest-Graded Preseason CB

The Raiders are just a day removed from final roster cuts and their cornerback room, for now, has been trimmed down to just five players.

Eric Stokes, Decamerion Richardson, Darien Porter, Darnay Holmes and Kyu Blu Kelly would be the Raiders’ cornerbacks if the season started tomorrow, and many would consider that the weakest position group on the roster.

From a league standpoint, the Raiders have one of the least-proven cornerback rooms in the NFL and that dynamic is only amplified by the fact they traded arguably their top returning cornerback to the Eagles three weeks ago.

In two preseason games, Jakorian Bennett has seemingly been everything the Eagles hoped for and was their highest-graded cornerback (Pro Football Focus) among Philadelphia players with at least 25 snaps in the preseason.

NFL Draft Files on X (formerly Twitter): “Jakorian Bennet this preseason for the #Eagles: ▫️ 86.2 PFF coverage grade▫️ 8 targets▫️ 5 catches allowed ▫️ 37 passing yards allowed ▫️ 2 PBUs▫️ 73.4 passer rating allowedPlayed even better than his stats. Very tight coverage, just some tough catches. pic.twitter.com/yLsC5o96hz / X”

From the long-term standpoint, it’s understandable that Raiders head coach Pete Carroll didn’t see Bennett as part of the plan, but with so much uncertainty at the position, it’s fair to wonder if the decision makers in Las Vegas made a mistake by unloading the third-year cornerback.

Bennett will need to prove he can stay healthy in Philadelphia, and it’s going to be interesting to see who ultimately gets the better end of the trade.

Former Eagles defensive tackle Thomas Booker IV, who came to Vegas in the Bennett trade, played in all three preseason games and walked away with a 52.9 overall Pro Football Focus grade – which was well below Bennett’s mark (79.5).

PFF is hardly the authority on player evaluations, but it wouldn’t hurt any feelings among Raider Nation to see their preseason grades be a little closer in proximity.

  1. A.Cooper was in the too 10 in dropped passes in the entire NFL. Dallas got rid of him as did the raiders.
I can’t understand why the team beat writers are so positive about him. He has alligator arms

  2. I’m one of the few that commented on the disappointment of Carroll trading our best CB, just bc he didn’t meet his physical measurables! Now the CB position is being mentioned as a weak link for the team?! I hope the waiver wire pickup DT ,we got in exchange for Bennett, contributes something. Seems like a Gruden type trade!

  3. Unfortunately, not a surprise. Bennett is a good player, when he’s healthy. The Eagles, unlike the Raiders, are a consistently well run team. They saw the opportunity to get a starting caliber QB at a discount because of his injury history.
