Former Teammate Details No. 1 Qualities Tom Brady Will Be Looking for in the Next Raiders Quarterback

Since Tom Brady joined the Raiders as a minority owner at the end of last year, one of the dynamics everyone has been talking about is his role in finding the team’s next franchise quarterback.

Brady is expected to have potentially the strongest voice in the building on the Raiders’ quarterback room and there is some mystery to exactly what traits and abilities Brady will be looking for in the team’s next quarterback.

Former NFL quarterback Brian Hoyer has a tremendous amount of familiarity with Brady, and he was asked by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer what he believes Brady will be looking for as he evaluates rookie and veteran quarterbacks.

“No. 1, in my opinion, has got to be toughness, work ethic, leadership,” Hoyer said. “All of those things, which is why you’re probably going to see him initially go, obviously, make a play for Stafford, possibly for [Aaron] Rodgers, a guy he knows can come in and settle the ship until he can find the young guy that they believe in.”

“There’s a big mental aspect that’s probably going to go into [the decision] and I’m sure any quarterback that’s going to be brough in to be considered the quarterback of the Raiders at some point is going to sit down with Tom Brady and he’s going to go over things and say ‘Ok, it’s third down and here comes the weak safety blitz. How are you going to handle that?'”

We’ve heard Brady talk about the mental component of playing the quarterback position, so Hoyer’s comments on toughness, work ethic and leadership shouldn’t come as a surprise, but he also threw out the name ‘Aaron Rodgers’ as a possible veteran stopgap.

Since Matthew Stafford made the decision to return to the Rams, Rodgers has been floated as a possibility for the Raiders and according to an Associated Press report this week, Rodgers is on the radar in Las Vegas.

According to the AP’s Rob Maaddi, it’s unlikely that Russell Wilson is going to land in Las Vegas, but Rodgers is a player the decision-makers in Las Vegas are still discussing. As of last week, Maaddi says the jury was still out on whether or not the Raiders will pursue Rodgers.

Rob Maaddi on X (formerly Twitter): “#Raiders would be an option for Aaron Rodgers IF he could fit into offensive coordinator Chip Kelly’s system. A team official told me last week the staff hasn’t made that determination yet. The source also said a reunion between Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll is unlikely. / X”

  1. I thought jay was a good quarterback took the RAIDERS to the AFC Championship game where the bills got away with a lot of fouls… still remember the SI issue front page it shows jay getting his head ripped off by the face mask and no penalty called… they should sell that stadium to the A’s and move back to California.
