Geno Smith Rumored to be Quarterback the Raiders Are Interested In

The Raiders are working hard to secure a veteran quarterback before the draft and there are some indications they aren’t particularly fond of their options in the free agent market.

Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter has been hinting for weeks that J.J. McCarthy is near the top of the Raiders wish list at quarterback, but as of now it doesn’t seem like Minnesota is willing to part with last year’s first round pick.

That could change, but in the meantime, it sounds like Tom Brady and company might have their eyes on a trade for another quarterback.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini hinted about a mystery quarterback the Raiders were interested in on Friday, and Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter seemed to fill in some of the blanks a little later.

On the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast, Carpenter said the Raiders are believed to be interested in a potential trade for Geno Smith.

“I am going to give you another one that you have not heard,” Carpenter said in regard to quarterbacks the Raiders are looking at. “I am told by NFL people that they believe that there is a legitimate chance, not saying probable, but I am saying possible, that Geno Smith is one of those names that the Raiders are looking at for a quarterback next year.”

“I am not saying anything is imminent, but I am saying I am hearing it for NFL people that they are heading it,” Hondo continued. “When I reached out to someone earlier today to ask their opinion… all I was told was ‘I’d rather not comment on that.’ You can ready that however you want… I think Geno would be in play.”

At about the same time as Carpenter’s report, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said the Raiders are “one million percent” in the mix to trade for D.K. Metcalf.

Maybe Pete Carroll is trying to get the band back together or maybe today’s news is a lot of smoke and the decision makers in Vegas are trying to move along conversations with another team.

Whatever is happening behind the scenes, it sounds like there could be news coming on the quarterback situation in Las Vegas sooner rather than later.

  1. Are there any Seahawks that Hondo Carpenter hasn’t linked to coming to the Raiders? Steve Largent coming out of retirement? Cortez Kennedy? Click bait Carpenter keeps throwing stuff against the wall, hoping something will stick, but it slides down into the big stink pile that used to be Sports Illustrated. Raiders are not going to trade assets like a first or second round pick for a WR who wants near 30 m on his next deal, or Geno Smith, one of the reasons Pete Carroll was looking for a job. Vikings aren’t parting with McCarthy, he will probably be their starter at some point this year. Get off the bar stool and let your sources go home and sober up.

      1. I guess so. 92nd pick does upgrade the QB room. Still need to draft a guy on day 1 or 2.

        1. Agree. This is a stop gap move. I don’t think this guy was worth a 3rd rd pick, though.

  2. exactly i hope caroll dont try yo bring invall these average players we have that already.steal burrow, stafford, prescott, fields,or just keep what we got mediocreness is why we suck.

  3. Geno Smith7 welcome to the warm desert of Nevada, congratulations bro I hope you light it up. Get Metcalf and Lockett in here quick. Great job General Spytek all we traded is Davante Adams pick from the jets. Great job, go get AJ Ashton Geanty at 6. Miroe round 2 😮

    1. i can’t disagree. at the end of the day, the Raiders are marginally better than we were. third round picks are 50 -50 prop bets.

    2. I’m praying we get jeanty at 6!! I believe he will do what Brock did for us and he’s generational like Brock!!Milton in second too or move up to late first round and get Dart!!

    1. Just wasted a valuable 3rd rd pick. Why is Carroll so high on this guy???!!! Maybe the Seahawks were right in canning his arse.

  4. Only Pete Carroll has a high opinion of Smith. He isn’t worth a 3rd rounder. Like Carson Palmer, this guy is an init machine. Just overpaid for a journeyman QB. Panic move by Brady&Co. I wouldn’t be complaining if they had given up, say, a 5th rounder for this guy. Nothing special in Geno Smith’s play. Not a good sign of how Brady will be running the team.

  5. Spytek with an awful.move right off the bat.

    This does not inspire confidence.

A 3rd round pick for an old bum.

    What is he doing?

A washed up bum that got cut in Alex Cappa.

    What is he doing?

    Awful.
