There have always been reasons to doubt Hunter Renfrow. He isn’t the fastest, tallest, or strongest, and he looks more like a kind-hearted kicker than he does a wide receiver. But Renfrow has become increasingly more difficult to defend in each of his three NFL seasons and he has grown into one of the cornerstones of the Raiders’ offense.
The “Third and Renfrow” hype has been around for a while, but the legend of Renfrow really took off in joint practices this year when he apparently twisted up All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey like a pretzel.

Renfrow has become nearly unstoppable on short and intermediate routes despite the fact that teams know the Raiders generally throw the ball when he is on the field. Through six games, the Raiders have called pass plays on 79.5% of Renfrow’s snaps.
Among pass-catchers in the NFL with at least 25 receptions this year, only six have created more separation than Renfrow (3.6 yards of separation per reception), according to Next Gen Stats. Those six players are Jayden Waddle, Cole Beasley, Cooper Kupp, Mercole Hardman, and two tight ends in Noah Fant and Dalton Schultz.
To this point in the season, Renfrow has the second-highest Pro Football Focus grade on the Raiders’ offense behind only Derek Carr. He has 31 receptions on 41 targets and is a good bet to go over 1,000 receiving yards for the first time in his career.
Something the Raiders might want to think about in the upcoming offseason is re-signing Renfrow. He’ll be a free agent after the 2022 season and his stock figures to only go up. He is, after all, the most reliable teammate anyone could ask for…
