The Raiders rolled out a lot of plays that didn’t work on Sunday, but there was one head-scratching play that’s been getting the most attention since the team’s 27-20 loss to the Chiefs.
Gardner Minshew’s fourth-quarter fumble was the play that essentially put the game out of reach for the Raiders, but it was the formation on the play that left fans questioning the offensive coaches again.
From the outside, it seemed bizarre that offensive coordinator Luke Getsy would line up Thayer Munford at wide receiver, but according to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, the Raiders were cooking up something with the formation.
“I am going to address one play. There was a play where Thayer Munford was out as a wide receiver. Now as many of you know, there are things that I’m not allowed to tell you because of my access that we get where we get to see plays worked on,” Hondo said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.
“I am not going to address that play. I have no problem with that play because I have understanding of what they were trying to do. I’m not going to say anything else. I have no problem with that [play]. I can understand why everyone else does, but based upon what I know, I’m going to give a mulligan on that one.”
Maybe we’ll see the formation again this season and if that happens, it will be interesting to see what kind of schematic advantage Getsy was trying to gain by lining up a 315-pound offensive tackle at wide receiver.
For what it’s worth, it did look like Munford was open on the second play. Maybe next time let the big dog eat?

They need to trade Kolton Miller. He’s given up more sacks and penalties than anyone else this season. Treat him now while you can get something for him and hope that nobody looks at his stats.
Hondo Carpenter claims to understand football but I have serious doubts. The guy is dead wrong 90% of the time. How sports illustrated hired him is mind boggling.
Maybe girls field hockey is more his speed.
Wadda gonna do,tie a double cheese burger to his face mask and hope he’ll run a 4.3 40…….NOPE
Oh my God, another thing Hondo Carpenter knows, but refuses to report?! Color me shocked! The dude is constantly talking about the access he has, but how it benefits his readers, I’ll never know, because other than make allusions to it, usually to carry someone’s water, he refuses to actually divulge any of this inside knowledge he claims to have.
