Are the Raiders going to take a big swing at quarterback in the next two months?
Maybe. But Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter doesn’t think the Raiders next big move at quarterback will come through free agency or a blockbuster trade to get to the top of the draft.
“I don’t believe, if I had to make a statement today, that the Raiders will be move up to [picks] one, two or three,” Hondo said this week on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast. “I don’t think that’s going to happen. Doesn’t mean it can’t, but I’m telling you based on information that I have been able to gather, that cost is too high if you’re not 100 percent certain of the guy you’re going to go get.”
As for the veteran quarterback options, it doesn’t sound like Kirk Cousins, Baker Mayfield or any of the other top their free agents are going to be a priority for the Raiders, either.
“I don’t think Kirk Cousins is on the table,” Hondo continued. “I don’t think Kirk or any other big free agent quarterback is on the table [for the Raiders]. I think at this point they are going to draft somebody and probably sign somebody to round up that quarterback room and have a competition.”
The one quarterback that hasn’t hit free agency (yet) is Russell Wilson, and it will be interesting to see the approach the Raiders take if Wilson is willing to sign a veteran minimum deal after being released by the Broncos.
Assuming the Raiders don’t make a splash at quarterback in free agency, it might make sense for them to target a quarterback in the second round of the draft.
Pairing a quarterback like Michael Penix with Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold seems like a scenario that might be attractive to the Raiders.
Also, is there anyone in the draft that would be a better personality fit with Pierce than Arnold?
