Kurt Warner: Derek Carr as Good as Anybody in the League “When he Plays Aggressive Football”

After the Raiders’ Thanksgiving win over the Cowboys last week, Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner broke down Derek Carr’s game film and talked about what he saw from Carr after re-watching the game.

Warner talked about the thought processes that go into reading a defense and explained how Carr followed his progressions against the Cowboys based on what the defense was showing him in coverage.

It’s no secret that Warner has long been a fan of Carr, but he offered a caveat to when he feels like Carr is at his best.

“As [the Raiders] have been up and down all year, they really go as Derek Carr goes,” Warner said. “A lot of people out there love him, hate him. I think he’s a really, really good quarterback when he plays aggressive football. He can be as good as anybody in the league.”

For years, Carr took criticism for not attacking defenses downfield enough. But this year has been different. When downfield threats have been on the field, Carr has been far more aggressive. In fact, no offense in the last 30 years has achieved more pass plays of 20+ yards though 12 weeks than the Raiders in 2021.

And imagine what this number could have been if the Raiders hadn’t gone three games without a consistent deep threat in the lineup…

Marcus Johnson on Twitter: “Raiders offense tied the 2018 Chiefs for the most pass plays over 20 yards with 58 though 12 weeks since the stat was added in 1991. Raiders are one of the most explosive teams of all time. pic.twitter.com/90jX39sTV0 / Twitter”

With six games remaining on the schedule, the Raiders need to win at least four more games – and possibly five – to make the playoffs.

It won’t be easy, but if the Raiders can continue to stretch the field on offense (and mostly abandon the dream of being a ground and pound offense), there’s no reason to think that the playoffs aren’t still within reach.

  1. I Mr. Warner should watch all of Derek’s game film before and after his injury in 2016 as I have and see if he still has the same insight, I seriously doubt it. Derek has flashes of his potential to be an upper tier quarterback, though they’re fewer and more far between since his injury and his inconsistency only seems to be interrupted by criticism of his play where he plays down to inferior opponents, panics under pressure when the pocket collapses on him and is either forced to scramble or takes an unnecessary sack, is guilty of not seeing wide open receivers or throwing behind, in front, short or long of them… you can not escape this because these are all facts not illusions whether you are a Carr supporter or not and I’m certainly not putting the entire blame on Derek because there have been many inconsistencies in the Raider organization from play calling by coaching staff that is as predictable as the sun rising to extremely terrible draft and free agent choices so it’s not entirely his fault and the Thanksgiving against America’s team showed he still has flashes of greatness in him especially when he ran the ball, which was an uh oh moment, but ran admirably and though he passed for nearly 400 yards he had only 1 passing touchdown and this game should have never went to overtime because we should have scored more touchdowns instead of the 5 fg’s by Carlson and the equally talented boost by punter Cole and our other outstanding player in Renfrow who has basically either kept us in or won more games for us than anyone! Speaking of kickers and punters we’ve always seemed to lock down some of the best the industry has seen in history I just wish and pray we can do that with our next quarterback whomever that may be and I’m alive to witness it along with the return of the “Autumn Wind”! God Bless Al Davis, God Bless Mark Davis, God Bless The Las Vegas Raiders and God Bless The Raider Nation❗🙏 Please Santa 🎅 all I want for Christmas is the playoffs, “Just Win Baby”‼️

  2. i think d carr is agood qb in top 10 in nfl but as i have said before you neen marlota in game a few more plays than the dallas game an i have always said defence keeps you in games in up coming draft good right tacle or center 2-4 defence 5 a hybrid player 6-7 wide out or a fast running back

  3. The major problem with D.Carr is that if you hit him hard early. And you hit him hard thru
the game he gets gun-shy looking for where the next hit is coming from. Then if the pressure is consistent he quits. He goes into a self-protection mode rather than the attack mode.
In games, and at times when he is the front runner and the pressure is light he does real well. But in games when your opponent is as good or better than you. You have to have the guts, the grunt to get up and fight back. This is not about how well D.Carr reads defenses and delivers the ball. It is more than talent and statistics. It is about being accountable to
your teammates when it’s against all odds.

  4. I believe that Derek Carr can be great if his mental state is solid. When the outside world “shakes” him, it’s very evident in his game play. He was relaxed and confident when Jon Gruden was out of the picture; but very shaken and defeated after Henry Ruggs debacle.
