Marcel Reece Shared His Thoughts on the Raiders Quarterback Situation

Raiders head coach Antonio Pierce announced last week that Aidan O’Connell will take the “first snap” when training camp begins in July, and some have taken that to suggest O’Connell is the team’s presumed starter in 2024.

Pierce was clear in his press conference that O’Connell and Gardner Minshew are going to compete for the job, and former Raiders fullback and senior advisor Marcel Reece shared this thoughts on the team’s quarterback situation this week.

Appearing on Up and Adams with Kay Adams, Reece said he thinks O’Connell will take the “first snap” because of the culture that Pierce is trying to instill in the locker room…

“I think it’s not so much about Aidan and Gardner, but more so about Antonio Pierce and the culture that he is trying to implement in that locker room. Meaning it’s not about how much money you make. It’s not about what you’ve done in the past. What are you going to do here? Can you show me the work?

Gardner Minshew hasn’t put on that silver helmet yet, and that’s something that you always have to earn. Whereas Aidan O’Connell was put in a situation where he had to step up to the plate, start on a team as a rookie, and makes plays for that team, and that’s hard thing to do. So what Antonio Pierce is doing for that locker room is saying ‘Show me that you can make a play. Show me that you’re going to do what’s necessary in this silver and black uniform and I’m going to give you an opportunity to keep your spot and earn your spot.”

It’s rare in the NFL that there is a legitimate quarterback competition in training camp, but it appears the Raiders are getting ready to have one.

It might be O’Connell’s job to lose in May, but the next several months are going to determine the starting quarterback in Pierce’s first full season as the Raiders head coach.

As training camp inches closer, there have been a number of insider opinions on who will ultimately win the job… and that vote seems to be split with the regular season opener a little less than four months away.

  1. I’m not comfortable starting Minshew over Aiden when I haven’t seen what Aiden can do when he gets OTAs, mini camp and mandatory camp with the ones only. Unlike last year! I’m excited to see him take the next step in his maturation. He’s got the talent now he just needs pull it in and put it together.

  2. I’m so tired of seeing all these “experts ” talking about the Raiders aren’t serious contenders without a qb…and the alleged raider faithful saying the same thing….unless I’m wrong, Aiden was a rookie last year that was thrown into a starting role after a complete flop by Jimmy G….to the best of my knowledge, somewhat based on statistical production, there was only one rookie qb to out perform Aiden….give the **** kid a chance….he has earned it!!

  3. I like the fact that we have two very capable QBs. Aiden should be better this year than he was last year, and Gardner is already league tested. After the last preseason game we’ll have an idea of who we think will start week 1.
I also think we’ll be better offensively in the red zone this year too! I’m looking forward to this.

  4. Cruz Montana is a free agent QB from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR. He was a very good QB there. No, he didn’t shock, electrify and break records in college but he was very good. He only started two whole years and had injury issues and missed one season(’20 Covid, athletic dept., closed). He had 46+ career passing TDs’ and 5 rushing TDs’. He would’ve had more TDs’ but the injuries and ’20 season made him miss games he did play last year a 5th year starter but shared the job with another Sr. QB so again, he didn’t get the chance to pass for more TDs and win games. He was a starter for most of his career. No, I don’t know if he’s related to HOF QB Joe Montana but he’s about the same size and wore his number at Lewis & Clark College.

We need to look at more QBs I don’t know what the Raiders’ game plan is for a playoff run so I don’t know if they’ll try to sign or trade for a QB before the regular season. I don’t know if they’ll stick with Minshew and O’Connell to find out who the starter is and if they do I hope they can do a good job but they might want a top NFL QB.
