There has been a lot of speculation about which quarterback will begin the summer at the top of the Raiders’ unofficial depth chart, and based on recent comments from Antonio Pierce, it’s going to be Aidan O’Connell.
Pierce met with members of the media prior to the start Friday’s rookie minicamp and spoke highly of O’Connell and Gardner Minshew… but he was clear that O’Connell will occupy the pole position at quarterback going into offseason activities.
“I think it’s going to be a process,” Pierce told members of the media on Friday. “We’re going to stick to the process, but as I’ve said before, Aidan has earned the right to go out there and get the first snap.”
“What Aidan did the last four games, and what he’s done this offseason, changing his body, his work ethic, being here every day, blocking out the outside noise. He’s not worried about anything. I’m excited.”
Pierce said there will be a competition at quarterback (regardless of who is QB1 in May) and if history is any indication, Minshew won’t go down easily.
Prior to Friday’s comments from Pierce, two insiders covering the team were leaning toward Minshew as the likely starter, and the QB battle in Las Vegas figures to drag out as one of the top storylines around the team in the months ahead.
As for the quarterback the fans believe will be the Raiders’ week 1 starter, Minshew had a slight edge as of last week…
