Until last week, Mick Lombardi was the offensive coordinator of the grossly underperforming Raiders offense.
Lombardi didn’t call plays and we don’t know exactly what his responsibilities looked like next to Josh McDaniels, but the two were apparently linked closely enough to be relieved of their duties together.
Lombardi’s father, Mike, has a long history with the Raiders and now he’s paid to share his opinions on the Raiders and every other team in the NFL.
The senior Lombardi acknowledged on The GM Shuffle that the Raiders offense has underperformed this year, but seemed to place a lot of the blame on the quarterback play…
“I thought they did a hell of a job keeping that game as tight as they did against Detroit, but when your quarterback can’t complete a high school pass… This rhetoric about ‘Oh my God, they’re not getting the ball to Davante Adams.’ Stop with the bullish— please. He’s open twice down the field and they’re high school throws and you don’t make them.”
Lombardi also talked about where he thinks the Raiders went wrong in terms of building the roster….
“One of the things that I’ve said forever… we talk about all the things that I believe make a football team. I’ve always said the last position you fix on the team, and this is a quote from Bill Walsh, not from me. But this was ingrained in my head and I preach it every year at the draft…
I think the Raiders are the perfect example of what Coach Walsh was talking about. When you fix the receiver position first with a great player and the rest of your team isn’t good enough, you’re done. You’re in trouble. And that’s exactly what happened…
They didn’t fix the offensive or defensive line. The Chandler Jones thing didn’t work out. They don’t take Jalen Carter in the first round. They take [Tyree] Wilson, who hasn’t been able to get on the field very much. They’re not good defensively up front. They’re not good offensively up front. So when you see this you say ‘Ok. That’s not the art of team building…’”
Sounds a little like he thinks the Raiders shouldn’t have made the trade for Davante Adams, doesn’t it?
twitter: @raidersbeat
They drafted stupidly and traded stupidly and released and let walk some of the better players.
I dont think anyone would argue we were a better team with Carr, Waller, Ngakoue, Heyward and Perryman than we are today. Throw Sololmon Thomas in there too.
We keep drafting OL but none of them have stuck besides Miller.
🔥
LOL, NO!
I have to amend my position on this issue.
Mark, stay away from morons like the lombaridis.
HOW TO HIRE A NFL COACH 101!
How about we help MD. Make it known, that we hire a coach based on the team we have, not the BS illusion of past success of the candidate. The only criteria for a new coaching hire is, Can you make my current rooster better like Rich Bisaccia and now A.P. It’s not rocket science ladies and gentleman.
Finally, this advice will not lead to a $85 million mistake and ridicule of your fans!
Class dismissed!
That is All!
FWIW, our draft was acceptable, but our coach and
GM were not.
Case closed!
Absolutely correct..done
Oh bullshit
Very well stated, its not rocket science the head coach is supposed to be a leader….
And Mike, the high school quarterback was chosen by the same guy who chose your son to be the offensive coordinator.
Sounds like Mike is saying you can only do with what you get for talent so it should not matter if we replace the coaches
I agree rich was a good coach. Look where he took us. Then you fired him for a coach that ruined the broncos. My daddy used to say if it’s not broken don’t fix it. There was nothing wrong with Carr except the coach we had. Waller is still a great tightened. And he stopped throwing the ball to Renfrow. You didn’t let Josh run the way he runs. JM littery ruined our Raiders and he’s a horrible Coach if I ever saw one. MD wake up and smell the Coffee from the NFL. When your dad got an old veteran he knew if they were still good or not. Jimm G was a horrible choice. He’s washed up. Only good for rocket throws for 10 to 15 yards only and to the left only. Go Raiders it can only get better.
AL Davis played football, coached football and knew who to hire. His son does not have that experience so he does not know what his dad knew and it has been obvious since he took over the Raiders. With Mark Davis it has been trial and error. Why would you hire a head coach who cheated in New England and failed in Denver. Why would you hire a QB prone to injuries and is not known for throwing deep passes, which is required when you have the top receiver in the NFL. He was better off staying with Carr, who was at least in the top 15 QB’s in the NFL and knows DA from college. Just watch, Mark Davis will not pay to keep RB Josh after this year. He has done this with many good players. Players become better and even great by studying the game and that is what Mark Davis needs to do so he knows who to hire and who to keep!
Good post. As long a Davis continues making the call of the HC and GM the team will continue to underperform.
He needs input from several NFL-experienced front office people in order to improve his chances of selecting the right combination to lead this team. He’s been a gross failure at running this team since he inherited
it 12+ years ago. Perfect example of the Einstein saying at work here, “doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting a different result”.
Amen I couldn’t have said it better myself.
Al Davis made plenty of bone headed draft picks himself.
I’ll say this as we’re about 5 years removed and Reggie Mac was a solid GM, and while he didn’t hit home runs with every pick, he was building a winner. Gruden and Mayock buried this team with their inability to properly draft, and then the next regime does the same thing. As much as I have been hard on Derek (he is gone), if Mark had fixed the defense, we may be contending right now for our fourth chip.
Reggie was a limited GM. He was great with the cap $ situation he inherited, but he failed on many other accounts. I’ll never forget Brandon Parker over O Brown, Jihad Ward, Obi Melifonwu, etc… He was OK, but limited.
Remember when RegMac had the 4 and traded down to 7 “and still got his man, DJ Hayden”. When DJ wasn’t even a top 6 at his position. Remember that bullsh!t?
R.I.P. DJ Hayden 🙏🏼

Lombardi is a hack.
Mike Lombardi was useless in the organization. Glad he’s gone. Carr was a garbage time Stat filler. The Saints put Hill at QB when they need to score. Carr stayed 6 years too long. Before you blame the defense, the last time the Raiders made the playoffs, they needed to win 4 straight games, which they did. Carr put up 2 tds and 4 FG in the second half of all 4 games COMBINED. The defense made the playoffs NOT Carr..
Jacobs carried the Offense towards that playoff appearance.
Don’t watch a lot of football, do ya?
Too soon with the Hayden comment. R.I.P
Regardless of what you think or feel about Lombardi, he’s right you know? About building a football team from the inside out. You build the lines, then you go get the skill positions. Lines, quarterback, then skills. If you can’t protect that qb, who can he throw to? If V you can’t stop the other teams quarterback, it doesn’t matter what receivers you have! In the AFC west it is all more important to have great lines! The quarterbacks and pass rushers in that division are all top notch. Why can’t the coaches of the Raiders see that?! It’s mind boggling!
He’s right about how to build a team. He’s Mike Lombardi about everything else, including his ability to actually do that when he had the chance.
Here’s a thing that really confuses me and leaves me wondering, about anything that comes out of the mouth of Michael Lombardi…. Why was it that when his son Mick became one of the assistant coaches for the Raiders, Micheal, was singing Josh McDaniels’s praises, and talking about Derek Carr And Darren Waller In the negative sense. how those two were both holding the team back,
And also in the same sentence saying that Jimmy Garoppolo was an upgrade from Derrick Carr?…..
Now after the fact that Josh McDaniels has been terminated along with Dave Zigler Michael Lombardi wants to say on the behalf of his son that the quarterback he was trying to coach couldn’t even throw a high school pass?
Really?????
First of all, RIP DJ Hayden, terrible tragedy! I’m sorry but I absolutely have to agree that if you thought or think that Jimmy G. is better than Derek Carr, then you should probably be watching the WNBA with Mark. Yes, Gruden isn’t the best draft pick guy in the world and he has made some stupid choices at times when it comes to that, but the bottom line is JOSH MCDANIELS IS A HIGH SCHOOL CALIBER COACH AT BEST. PERIOD! Without a guy by the name of Tom Brady, he would have had zero success ANYWHERE! He had one play to run on any down and any situation and there was: everybody go out; offensive line block; Tom: be the most successful quarterback of all time and throw it to them! Hey, wow… great job, Josh… Here’s millions of dollars! You’re awesome! The guy is a freaking clown and I would be shocked if he ever has any job of any kind in the NFL, I’ll be shocked!
1984
It isn’t just him…
Crazy How the 49ers could have him almost winning the Superbowl but we did have actual offensive coordinators and people working because they’re daddy is a company man. Your son suck worse than Josh McDaniels
HE WAS A CLONE OF JOSH MCANNEDIELS
You know what is funny about his comments? They are far different than those he spewed throughout while his garbage son was in his bs position. Lombardi is as reliable with his bs assessments as McDaniels n Ziegler are at positions they deceived their way into.
THE RAIDERS NEED TO CEASE ON HIRING OUTSIDE HEAD COACHES. THE RAIDERS WERE MAINLY A TEAM THAT HIRED THEIR ASSISTANT COACHES{JOHN RAUCH, JOHN MADDEN, TOM FLORES, ART SHELL, MIKE WHITE, JOE BUGEL, BILL CALLAHAN, RICH BISACCIA, AND ANTONIO PIERCE}AND WERE FOR THE MOST PART SUCCESSFUL WHEN THEY HIRED FROM WITHIN. ALL OF THE RAIDERS SUPERBOWLS WERE COACHED BY FORMER ASSISTANT COACHES. THE LIST IS SHORT OF SUCCESS,IN RAIDERS HISTORY,FOR OUTSIDE HEAD COACH HIREES{JOHN GRUDEN ROUND#1 ONLY, AND JACK DELRIO 2016}.GOING FORWARD FOR OUTSIDE HEAD COACHES THE RAIDERS SHOULD SEND A STRONG MESSAGE THAT:NO HELP IS NEEDED!!!AS FOR THE FORMER {UNOFFICIAL} OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR {ON PAPER ONLY}MICK LOMBARDI HE WASN’T THE MEDIA RECOGNIZED OFFENSIVE GURU AS HIS SUPERIOR JOSH MCDANIELS WHICH IS WHY HE WAS FORBIDDEN TO CALL PLAYS/GIVE ANY INPUT ON OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLS/OR ALLOWED TO EVEN 2ND GUESS THE GURU. SO SINCE MICK LOMBARDI DID NOT HAVE ANY CLUE OF CALLING PLAYS AND WAS PERCEIVED TO BE JUST A MERE UNDERSTUDY/CLONE OF HIS GURU BOSS{MCDANIELS}HE WAS THEREBY CANNED/DISMISSED/RELIEVED/FIRED/ALLOWED TO RUN OFF TO HIS DADDY AND WHINE ABOUT PLAYERS WHOM HE WAS HIRED TO COACH/AND PREPARE TO PLAY NFL FOOTBALL. THE RAIDER NATION IS TIRED OF THESE MISTAKES, IN REGARDS TO HEAD COACH HIRES, THAT HAVE SET THE TEAM TO THE BOTTOM OF THE CELLAR IN THE NFL*MUST I REMIND OUTSIDERS THAT “THE AUTUMN WIND IS A RAIDER” AND IT ALL STARTS AT THE HEAD COACHING/AND GENERAL MANAGEMENT/ASSISTANT COACHES/THEN TRICKLES DOWN INTO THE HEARTS&MINDS OF THE PLAYERS!!!
Your nuts only 2 good hires al made was madden and Gruden the rest all got fired or runoff.
First of all the Lombardi’s know football, mc d wouldn’t let him do anything because he wanted to do everything himself. I get real tired of people bashing carr he can make all the throws Arron Rodgers can make and he can read defenses. If you were to put Tom Brady or Arron Rodgers on the raiders with the same offensive lines carr had to work with they would not have been able to make plays either. When carr was getting to drop back and get rid of the ball quickly they moved the ball well. But they expected him to wait for someone to get open down field to much and he never had any time. Same thing with the saints. Did you see the few plays Rodgers had with the jets the defence was on him every play then he was out. You gotta have an offensive line, if you don’t any Q B will look bad.
Unfortunately this is lost on the anti-Carr mob. They don’t seem to understand that the problems are organizational, more than they’re positional. A QB has to have time to throw and that it doesn’t matter how many points you put up if the D constantly gives up more. On top of that the revolving door OC’s and systems over the years just made it worse. And it’s the organizations job to see that and work to correct it.
But the haters don’t get this so they blame the QB because he makes the most money and the oversimplification gives them a single person to put the blame on. And honestly I suspect some of them also hate him because he seems like a pretty decent human being and isn’t afraid to act like it. This makes them ask questions about themselves that they don’t really want the answers to so they feel uncomfortable and blame him for it. Yeah I know, people will call that “pop-psych” crap but I’d bet I’m not too far off.
Carr may not have been Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady, but I’m fairly confident that neither of them could have done much better in the same circumstances. Guess we’ll never know though.
