The Raiders offense has not been good in the first half of the season and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy will want to boost his approval rating soon if he’s going to hold on to his job.
Getsy’s play-calling has been questionable in his first year with the team, and there has been talk that the Raiders might make some kind of significant offensive adjustment in the weeks ahead.
To this point, though, the only coaching move involving Getsy has been the decision to have him call plays from the booth. Unfortunately, the offense hasn’t improved since Getsy moved upstairs and some are wondering if he could lose play-calling privileges or be fired during the bye week.
It’s all speculation at this point, and there might not be any quick fixes on the table, under the table, or even anywhere around the table.
Taking that sentiment a step farther, at least one beat writer covering the team is getting tired of all the finger pointing at Getsy.
The Athletic’s Vic Tafur has been in agreement that the Raiders’ offense has been bad, but he doesn’t believe a change at offensive coordinator will make much of a difference.
“I’m not sure I can handle another nine weeks of Luke Getsy talk on social media and from reporters,” Tafur said on the Just Win podcast this week. “Clearly, the offense stinks. I don’t know if that’s all on Luke. I mean, we talked about this before. Gardner’s got 11 turnovers. Most in the league.”
“They can’t run the ball, [the] offensive line wasn’t very good and now they’re kind of banged up,” Tafur continued. “So I don’t know what difference it would make. I know fans want change, but I guess the hope is that for the Raiders, and the coaches have said this to the players, you kind of keep working at it. You hope it clicks at some point… But I just think that I just can’t handle much more Luke Getsy talk. I’m at the end of my rope with that one.”
To this point in the season, Pierce has not been overly critical of Getsy, and Pierce even talked this week about recommitting to the running game. At Monday’s press conference, Tafur asked Pierce if there has been any talk of moving away from the running game when it isn’t working.
Pierce was quick with an answer.
”Oh, no, we got to run the ball. Can’t do that,” Pierce said. “[We] can’t sit there and throw the ball 50 times, 40 times. We haven’t been successful doing it, so we’ll keep pounding again. On Wednesday, we’ll get back out there again… and figure out how to run the ball… [and] do whatever it takes to win the line of scrimmage.”
Those remarks from Pierce can be loosely interpreted as an indication that Pierce likes what the offense is trying to do right now… it just isn’t working… and the coaching staff is going to keep trying to do it that way until it works.
Going back a few days, one of the top conversation pieces around the Raiders’ 27-20 loss to the Chiefs was the team’s inability to get the ball to Brock Bowers after the first quarter.
Some have suggested the Chiefs made adjustments to slow down Bowers in the second half, but according to Las Vegas Review-Journal insider Vinny Bonsignore, there were plenty of opportunities to get the ball to Bowers in the second half on Sunday.
“Looking back at the film, there are plenty of opportunities for Brock Bowers,” Bonsignore said on Raider Nation Radio’s JT the Brick Show on Tuesday.
“I know there’s been a lot of finger pointing at… Luke Getsy for not targeting Brock Bowers, but we don’t know what the play call is on those plays where Gardner [Minshew] looks elsewhere or gets rid of the ball quickly because he’s feeling pressure. Because if you watch the tape, you see that there’s designs for Brock Bowers to get open.”
To Bonsignore’s point, and maybe Tafur’s as well, the turning point of the Raiders’ season probably came on a well-designed play from Getsy that should have given the team a 17-0 lead over the Broncos.
Instead, an unexplainable pass from Gardner Minshew led to pick-six and the Raiders haven’t been the same since…

No matter how much you polish a turd, it’s still a turd!! Wake up already Raiders!
You people need to stop complaining about our offense, if you don’t like it find another team. What you so-called experts don’t realize is that we have the most balanced offense in the entire NFL. Let’s take last week’s game against chiefs, we didn’t run the ball worth a shyt , but we didn’t catch it either…….balance offense.
The problem is the scheme that they’re running. The zone blocking scheme never works for us. We should go back to man blocking. Firing Getsy and putting Joe Philbin in charge is not gonna help things because he too believes in the zone scheme.
The problem is the play designs do not pass the eye test, and if personnel is sub-par in a particular way, then, shouldn’tthere be a way to tryand call plays accordingly?
Than say goodbye cupcake. Fans with a clue are going to yell from the mountain tops when they see incompetence or woeful performances. Last time I checked it’s our money that powers the league, and your job.
Change will come Tuesday when he stinks it up again. We need a fiesta energetic coach who can occasionally throw some razzle dazzle into the play calling. When you 1st and goal at the 4 and can’t punch it in something is definitely wrong. If straight ah ahead doesn’t work try a screen a pitch a double reverse. Mr Getsy you are pretty much fried. Move on sir.
Well what ever you think your opinion i judging by past as OC (2 years in Chicago) and present 6 weeks as A RAIDER OC should be fired and shouldn’t have been hired by the RAIDERS to begin with. Yes I said 6 weeks meaning he should have been fired 2 weeks AGO. The longer we keep him the harder I’m going to be looking at AP. 2 and a half years as a failed OC tells me he was a assistant coach riding the coat tails of some good OC s for some time. I don’t know what or how can’t figure out about Luke’s resume but I see a person who has failed to live up to his obligations and therefore needs to be shown the door 2 weeks AGO. If you all get yourselves a pro football team he’ll be available for you to hire and good luck with that.
F U if you don’t want to publish my comment then don’t ask for it. There was neither any slander used or implied. It was only truth based facts and was a opinion “my opinion” which was not slanderous but conflicted with another persons opinion.
It’s not all Gersy fault. But a lot is. He was terrible with the Bears. Not sure why you think he would be better with worst players
Also, can’t believe the plan was to rely on Minshew. You need a running game when you have subpar qb. For the life of me not sure why they didn’t keep Josh Jacob’s. Had alot of cap space . His contract wouldn’t had been detrimental
Don’t forget there are reasons why minshew and gets lost there jobs prior to being signed by the raiders
