The Raiders don’t know exactly what they are getting in Kenny Pickett, but after giving up a fifth-round pick for him at the start of the week, the decision makers in Las Vegas have legitimately invested in the former first-round pick.
In Cleveland, Pickett found himself in one of the most complicated quarterback rooms in recent memory and despite rumors the Browns were considering keeping four quarterbacks, the Raiders were able to make a trade and add Pickett.
As a couple of media personalities have pointed out, there was presumably some competition around the league for Pickett if the Raiders had to give up a fifth-round pick to get him, and Raider Nation Radio’s ‘JT the Brick’ said on Tuesday that Pickett was actually expected to be starting quarterback in Cleveland before a hamstring injury knocked him out of training camp.
“The Kenny Pickett story is really big because I talked to two Browns insiders, legit people, and they said that Kenny Pickett if he didn’t have his hamstring issue at the beginning of camp would’ve been the starter [in Cleveland],” JT said on his flagship radio show.
“I said ‘Wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, I need that for the show. What are you saying?’ Two guys called me back, not text, we talked. They said Kenny Pickett was by all intents and purposes, he was going to start over [Joe] Flacco, but his hamstring pulled, and he missed time and Flacco got the job.”
JT’s full statement on Pickett comes at the 17:15 mark in video below…

The Brick is an idiot, if he was that good Cleveland never would have got rid of him. Cleveland fleeced us out of a 5th.
Cleveland was praised for trading a 5th AND a player for Pickett, and when we trade ONLY a 5th, we’re ‘fleeced’. LOL…who is the idiot?
5th rounders have a 14%-15% success rate. I suggest you find something actually worth getting your drawers in a wad over. This ain’t worth worrying about.
Besides, the Browns now have 2 mid (at best) rookies behind grandpa Flacco. Who’s qb room is in better shape?
We drafted pro bowlers Shane Lechler, La’Roi Glover, and Lester the molester Hayes in the 5th rd. But, I’ll concede that with this front office we probably have a lower than 14% success rate with the 5th rd pick. We overpaid. Is this guy mobile enough to run Kelly’s offense??? AOC isn’t, they need to end the AOC INT MACHINE experiment.
3 out of 100’s of 5th round picks….maybe you’re not pessimistic enough
We could have got him for nothing after being cut fool so yes you are an idiot.
You think that, you don’t know that for certain. It’s a small price to pay, either way.
Unless you DO know everything….prob not tho or you wouldn’t be posting in here
You’re right AJ. The FO/HC overpaid for Pickett. It should’ve been at best a conditional 6th with the condition being he was on the 53 man roster for all 17 games. The entire off-season the FO/HC continue to lose on practically every transaction. Overdrafting and weird FAs signing. I’m positive that Pete is still a much better coach than AP but the roster is still terrible. Injuries are going to happen and the depth is flat-out terrible. Some projected starters would be 2nd or 3rd stringers on another club. We need all the picks we can possibly get ahold of and the FO just gave up on of next year’s picks for a QB to replace the 6th rounder from this year. It’s giving me vibes of the team prior to Carr. Always chasing their tail.
Pickett hands are even smaller than Carr was. I supported Derek Carr. When other’s was crying about his hands. He had more c game winners than our defense stopped. Pickett isn’t long term. I FEEL AOC, Should be kept build up the OH line.
Straight trash. Just how did they determine he was the starter if he didnt play in the preseason? I think the Raiders overpaid for this guy, This front office is really starting to show their ineptitude! Is Gruden consulting with the team??? They’ll be lucky to get any draft compensation for O’Connell!
Hunt the former Eagles executive who was poached by the Raiders highly recommended Pickett. If he was good enough to be the starting backup to Super Bowl champion hurts he will work as a backup for the Raiders. He is not a dual threat more known as a scrambler not like dead leg O’Connell. Let’s just let this cra$ go . Aiden will never play another Raider down!!! 🙏 Amen
Lol, come on, JT. Don’t try to make excitement for Kenny Pickett happen. Despite playing for better organizations, with better rosters, Pickett has been worse than Aidan O’Connell. Pickett is decidedly not good.
This is why Raiders state-run media is so laughable. The guys who work for the team or their affiliates, sime of the fan sites… No matter how many years the Raiders are awful, the shills are still trying to generate positivity and get fans to drink Kool-Aid. To be clear, there is plenty of quality Raiders reporting to be found. You just won’t get it from JT.
Agreed!
Raiders management, past and present, under Mark Davis is the poster child for ineptitude. As long as the Raiders have incompetent management they will never field a winning team. I’m over it and so are. much of Raider Nation.
Same. I just don’t get why there is so much of a market for pie in the sky coverage of this team year after year. Expectations should always remain low as long as a Davis is in charge. Last year, the Hondos and JTs were doing their best to convince us that AP was the perfect hire, and now Carroll it’s a great choice despite being eager to win right away with a team that went 4-13 last year. Season after season, they act like their covering competitive well-run organizations.
There are actually stories to cover about why the Raiders consistently fail. Instead, we get these guys uncritically repeating things they hear from who knows in the organization (are they assistant GMs? are they equipment guys?) about how there is no concern in the building regarding Christian Wilkins or how Pickett was going to start for the Browns.
Kenny Picket. Wilson Pickett would have been a better signing.
Nah, this report is way off. Yes, when the Browns traded a 5th round pick and DTR to the Eagles for Pickett, they looked at him as their starter for this season. Then later the signed Flacco off the couch again to a one year deal to be the backup. But I believe that the way Shedeur showed up in OTAs and minicamp, that kind of screwed up the Brown’s and Pickett’s plans. Because I heard from a source that the Browns had been trying to trade Pickett since after minicamp with no interest. So there was absolutely no market out there for Pickett. The only reason they were able to trade him is solely because Aidan O’Connell got hurt. Otherwise he would’ve been cut some time before the season opener. Pickett is not good at football 🙆🏾♂️
