The Raiders are expected to take at least another week or two interviewing head coaching candidates, and the belief is that they will place an emphasis on finding a young offensive-minded coach.
Two of the more prominent names that have been linked to the Raiders are Kevin Stefanski and John Harbaugh, but according to Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter, it’s a long shot that either coach will end up in Las Vegas.
“I think Stefanski or Harbaugh would be great hires [but] they’re not going to be great hires in Vegas,” Carpenter said on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.
“Both men are going to want more money in longer terms than the Raiders are willing to give, number one. And can you blame Mark? I mean, he’s paying tens of millions to people who don’t coach here anymore. Then, they’re going to want more control than the Raiders are willing to give.”
Earlier in the week, Carpenter said Davis Webb had a “phenomenal” interview with the Raiders, but he offered two more names to keep an eye on, as well.
“I think they’re going to end up with a young coach. I think they’re going to end up with a young offensive coach,” Carpenter continued.
“Klint Kubiak is a name. Mike LaFleur is a name. Davis Webb is a guy that had a great interview. I think there was a little bit of a wow factor there that he really hammered it out of the park. They’re interviewing a bunch of guys that maybe don’t make sense because they’re defensive guys, but they’re willing to be [blown away].”
With more than $100 million in projected salary cap room and the first overall pick, Las Vegas should be a more desirable coaching destination than it was a year ago when Ben Johnson turned down Tom Brady and company for the Chicago Bears.
It’s only January, but it feels like Fernando Mendoza is already locked in to be the no. 1 pick in the draft.
Not everyone is sold on Mendoza, but he has been shedding doubters every week of the college playoff… with one more game to go.
For what it’s worth on John Harbaugh…
On Friday, ESPN’s Tony Grossi shared what he has heard Harbaugh is looking for from his next coaching stop.
“I talked to a league insider who speculates on what he’s heard about Harbaugh’s prerequisites to even be interested in your job,” Grossi told ESPN Cleveland on Friday.
“[He wants] $20 million a year, $10 million assistant coach budget, total authority over the roster and also would like to select his own personnel guy to lean on.”

As good as those coaches are or have been they flamed out were they are. To start making demands on their hiring is bulls#!t. The Raiders do need a young offense coach to run the team. Mike Lafeur makes sense to me. Pull your heads out your a$$ ownership. Has just doing the thing ever crossed your mind?
The RIght thing? You know what I meant.
I would give it to him. Harbaugh would make them a winner in 2 to 3 years.
Agreed
I’m not interested in this Harbaugh, he’s not a fit with the Raiders. Stefanski, intrigues me, but i think he will have better opportunities and Vegas would have to overpay and commit. One thing I know, all these guys are going to use the Raiders as a bargaining chip. We might be the last team to make a hire, maybe Arizona. Spytek should hire a young offensive minded guy without previous head coaching baggage. Draft the QB that they know will lead this team. Secure the good pieces we have and start building around them.
I’m all about Kubiak or Webb. I think Stefanaski would be a good hire & come here and won’t be demanding the world.
One thing with Mendoza is he’s a natural leader so I think we can have the nerdy schematic type be HC.
Natural leader that lives on throwing exclusively underneath and from the shotgun formation.

Check down Charlie personified
With the first pick in the draft
Yeah I can blame him. Listening to incompetence has got him in this situation. Harbaugh would be the guy that you wanna throw all the money at. In fact, give him the checkbook.
