Reggie Wayne Says Amari Cooper Added Too Much Muscle Mass This Year

Former Colts wide receiver Reggie Wayne believes he knows some of what was wrong with Amari Cooper this season.

Wayne thinks Cooper added too much muscle in the offseason.

“That can slow you down and make you a little stiff,” said Wayne. “I don’t think he ran his routes the same. He used to run great routes. This year he seemed like he was more of an 18-wheeler.”

The biggest issue with Wayne’s theory… how did Cooper explode for 210 yards in week 7 if muscle mass was indeed slowing him down?

Did the muscle mass go away for one week and return the next?

It’s an interesting theory, but not one that stands to reason. In fact, Cooper has noted in the past that he always adds weight in the offseason (and his weight likely drops during the season).

The Raiders offense underachieved across the board in 2017 – large and small players alike. Cooper had issues, but being stronger was surely the least of the contributing factors.

  1. It doesn’t explain his terrible hands year after year. I say trade him for a 1st round pick and move on with a WR with better hands, then use the additional 1st round pick on defense.

      1. U r the idiot cuz what ole boy above said was rite on the money. Cooper has had terrible hands and so has Crabtree n Roberts. The raiders allowed their best receiver (Andre Holmes) to leave last offseason to Buffalo. U should know what u r saying b4 u call some1 an idiot when in fact ur comment made u the idiot.

  2. Yea a 1st rounder for Cooper, you think with his drops over the last few years as you mentioned were gonna get a 1st rounder for him, ok,

  3. He’s almost damaged goods now that everybody knows he has a case of the drops (every year), lucky to get a 4th rounder for him, he’s considered mediocre right now, hopefully he turns this problem around this year or with the new coach it will be unacceptable & then time to make a move,

  4. I believe they need 2 get rid of all receivers n get sum that can catch passes rite 2 them. Its 2 bad they waited so long into season 2 get ball 2 Cook who has gud hands n made huge difference in games they threw his way. Raiders truly need 2 get rid of McKenzie cuz he made horrible decisions n Raiders need a lot of things.

    1. Reggie has REALLY chit the bed the past 3 drafts. We have zero players from the 2012 draft, zero players from the 2013 draft, nailed 2014, then blew 2015, 2016, and 2017. We can’t afford to keep starting 7th rounders & UDFA’s hoping they’ll instantly turn into superstars and expect to compete.

  5. Mistakes on Sunday stem from a lack of discipline during the practice week. Practice develops muscle memory.
