The Raiders’ head coaching search should be closing in on a decision in the days ahead and the popular opinion right now is that their next head coach is going to be either Klint Kubiak or Davis Webb.
If it does come down to those candidates, though, there could be some challenges.
Something seems to have spooked Kubiak since his first interview with the Raiders and several reports have indicated that Kubiak has not yet accepted a second interview.
Webb is under some pressure to stay in Denver and on Tuesday the Broncos cleared the way for Webb to be promoted by firing offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi.
It isn’t clear why the Raiders haven’t settled on a candidate, but according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, there is another candidate planning to interview this week.
Russini didn’t name the mystery candidate, but if talks have stalled with Kubiak and Webb, there is a chance they might circle back to Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur.
Earlier in the week, league insider Josina Anderson said the Raiders have “an affinity” for LaFleur but it has become apparent since her comments that LaFleur wasn’t the team’s no. 1 choice.
It’s possible the mystery interview could be with Kubiak, but there aren’t any obvious reasons to hide his identity if that were the case.
Whatever the case, if the Raiders are leaking news of an interview with a mystery candidate, it gives the appearance from the outside that they might be backpedaling a little.
That’s just a guess, but it definitely seems like Kubiak isn’t sold on something about the situation in Las Vegas and the team must have some level of reservation about Webb or they wouldn’t have let him leave the building on Monday without a deal.

It’s pretty obvious they are going to screw this up again! Looks like they’ll have to settle for another 1 and done coach. Sell the team Mark!
Then why not hire Webb if Kubiak is spooked? They’ve obviously put their eggs in the Kubiak basket & if they can’t deliver
Its become obvious that none of our top choices (Kubiak and Webb) want the job any longer. So now we’re gonna come crawling and begging someone from the Rams staff to please take this job. We’ve become somewhat of a joke around the league behind closed doors i bet. Its really no telling when this team will get outta its own way and become respectable again. My guess is…no time soon.
just like every year since Al Davis passed away, the powers to be cannot make a decision! They have known since the middle of this past year they would need to move on yet most all the other teams that have needed to hire a coach have done so, and Raiders keep dragging their feet! They will end up just like every other year taking whoever they can and dealing with another bad year. they keep saying they are trying to get it right this year, yet their actions prove otherwise. by the time they sign someone to coach, they will be left struggling to fill the roster with the help they need.
At this point i almost feel sorry for Mendosa because he will get beat up and destroyed before he gets a chance.
I apologize for the negativity in this rant, but i am so sick of the feet dragging and losing all the people that could have been hired as head coach. I question now, what happens if Kubiack decides to stay with Seattle? All the Raiders top candidates are gone!
Just hire Webb and consider yourself lucky to get him. Tom Brady is single-handedly destroying us.
