Report: Raiders Expected to Pursue Byron Jones In Free Agency

Ask just about anyone around the league and the consensus is that the Raiders are expected to be very aggressive in free agency, especially on the defensive side of the ball.

The areas of greatest need on the Raiders roster are cornerback and linebacker so it should come as no surprise that a report on Saturday morning linked the Raiders to arguably the best cornerback expected to hit free agency.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s Vinny Bonsignore, the Raiders are expected to make a run at Cowboys’ defensive back Byron Jones, assuming he gets to free agency.

Jones is an exceptional athlete (who turns 28 in September) and is expected to get around $15 million per year in free agency, but it’s worth noting that he has only two interceptions in 79 career NFL games.

The Raiders are expected to have more than $50 million in salary cap space at the start of the 2020 league year, but that number could quickly jump to around $70 million with a little shuffling around of the roster. $50 million may sound like a lot, but considering the needs on the Raiders roster it could definitely disappear quickly, especially if they manage to outbid the competition for a player like Jones.

  1. It’ll come down to if he’s worth $15M per season. The Raiders have paid former Cowboys DBs handsomely before, and they haven’t worked out after joining the team.

    1. Guaranteed Brady is NOT coming to Vegas, rumors are just a ploy to inflate he’s $$$ number to wherever he’s signing to and it’ll probably be back New England

  2. Focus on surrounding DC with “real” “actual” receivers and deep down threats. We don’t want Brady! It’ll be a huge set back, stop living in the past, DC has 2 years under the new system and has taken great strides in mastering the play calls.. Gruden/Mayock don’t shoot yourselves in the foot.

  3. But yes please lock down Byron Jones! He should be our number 1 free agent target and the one free agent we need!
