Report: Raiders Have Not Yet Submitted an Interview Request for a Head-Coaching Candidate

The Raiders are looking for their next head coach, but it could be a while before they have one.

According to CBS Sports insider Jonathan Jones, the Raiders have yet to submit an interview request for a head-coaching candidate.

Jonathan Jones on Twitter: “As this afternoon, the Las Vegas Raiders had not officially submitted an interview request for a head-coaching candidate, per source. That’s unusual considering 1) they have to go through the interview process no matter what and 2) they’ve had a vacancy longer than any team. / Twitter”

As this afternoon, the Las Vegas Raiders had not officially submitted an interview request for a head-coaching candidate, per source. That’s unusual considering 1) they have to go through the interview process no matter what and 2) they’ve had a vacancy longer than any team.

As Jones pointed out, the Raiders have had a head-coaching vacancy longer than any team in the league, but one of the reasons they probably haven’t held head-coaching interviews is because they don’t know who is going to do the interviewing.

The Raiders haven’t named a general manager, and there is a lot of speculation about who is going to be a part of the Raiders hiring process – even after they have a GM.

Many believe team owner Mark Davis would like to hire a GM first, but it’s no secret that they have made efforts to figure out which potential GMs would work with some of their top candidates at head coach. In that sense, the process doesn’t seem to be a lot different than it was two years ago.

Dave Ziegler was hired because the Raiders knew he would be Josh McDaniels’ choice to be his general manager. It would be naive to think that Ziegler would have gotten the Raiders’ GM job without the understanding that McDaniels was coming with him.

The Raiders might not be behind schedule in their search for a GM and head coach, but there are definite benefits to having those positions filled sooner than later. Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter talked about some of those benefits in his Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast on Thursday.

As of now, there have been a handful of coaches linked to the Raiders’ job, but most seem to believe that Jim Harbaugh and Antonio Pierce are the top candidates for the job.

  1. Why would we hire a gm before hiring a coach? Recipe for failure.
Feels like we are just hopelessly adrift. Mark Davis needs to sell, the guy is hopelessly lost as an NFL owner.

    1. Because the HC reports to the GM. Therefore, it would only be fair that the GM has a say in who he’s going to have on his staff. Plus they work very closely in personnel decisions. You want someone who shares the same vision and doesn’t butt heads with you.

  2. Mark, do what is right for your players past and present. Do what is right for Raider Nation. Don’t let these 2 slip away. The resume is on the grass. He has trust in all of his players. They will play for him, they have already shown that. Keep Coach Pierce and GM Bailey. Put all of your effort in getting to the top and draft Daniels. CJ stroud is playing tomorrow we are not. Thank McClueless and McZiggy for that, yah Rock Stars allright. Do it mark!!

  3. It’s normal to hire the GM first. The GM have to hire all the staff he will work. If it’s going to be a new GM from outside, he will want his own scouts and start hiring the assistant coaches based on the head coach chosen. All this must happen quickly before best are gone.

    1. No GM, no interviews and one day after Belichik is let go, Robert Kraft has his new HC. Everyone on planet earth seen the job AP did and still Davis didn’t learn a thing by letting Rich Bassacia go. Hire the man already before the Giants hire AP as their Defensive Coordinator and then becomes their HC or the Titans hire him as their new HC. This place and Raider players will erupt for the good if Davis makes the right decision with AP. And not so good if not.

  4. C’mon, just give AP the job! He’s done a stellar job, even if his record is 5-4, what he accomplished in the locker room is beyond the record and invaluable. Gruden had his chance, and Maxx Crosby said it perfectly “… When you have a leader of men, I don’t know why you’d let him go.” And let Champ Kelly have a shot, both he and AP have EARNED IT.

  5. I been a raider fan for over 30 years and I ve seen alot of coaches come and go but I never seen my players play as hard as they do for AP if mark does not give AP the job I will no londer be a raider fan

  6. MD should already have a plan in place. It appears he doe’s not and could mess this up.

  7. Mark

    You cannot be this stupid
Your father is crying please for raider Nation hire these two people.
They certainly can’t be as bad as the two idiots they replaced

  8. To be honest, I believe Mark Davis is going to be “putting” the decision on the new GM’s shoulders. That way when he unfortunately walks away from Antonio Pierce, he can give the new GM “all the credit.” As well as blame if he fails. His last two selections at HC have ended in disaster! So I’m certain he won’t be selecting, well in the open sense, the next HC. He will most definitely be making the final calls behind the curtain but, he failed majorly with Josh McDaniels and really Gruden too. So he’ll want an insurance policy with the fans just in case. That’s my 2 cents though.
