Romanowski: Khalil Mack “Better Get His A– Back In Camp”

Bill Romanowski doesn’t often hide his opinion on matters and, like everyone else, he has an opinion on Khalil Mack’s holdout.

“He better get his a– back in camp,” Romanowski said Wednesday on 95.7 The Game. “And, let this play out, earn his way back. I think he’s hurting himself and I think he will be back. I think there’s too much to lose. To me, you let your playing do the talking and let that give you your money.”

From Mack’s perspective, he has not only been underpaid for the last three years, but a serious injury in the preseason (or regular season) could cost him as much as $60 million in guaranteed money. Mack is set to make $13.8 million on his fifth-year option, but the guaranteed money he’s going to get in a new deal is thought to be around $75 million.

To this point in his four-year career, the Raiders have paid Mack a total of $18.6 million – a bargain compared to his production on the field.

As for the news that the Raiders have placed Mack on the trade block, that is surely the very fakest of the fake news. Not only have there been multiple well-connected reports that the Raiders are not trying to trade Mack, but the timing for a trade couldn’t be any worse. The compensation for a potential trade would have to include at least a couple very high draft picks and the Raiders couldn’t cash in on those picks until after the season – which means they’d get nothing in return for Mack in 2018.

Mack is going to be with the Raiders this year under his rookie deal or he is going to be with the Raiders under a new contract. There are no other realistic options at this point.

  1. The way I look at it Mack is a very good defensive player. That’s not the issue. How much is a team willing to pay him. The Raiders have just come out the dead money created during g the AL Davisit Era. Providing a high level of guaranteed money is good for Mack but not the Raiders . Vice versa is also true. I’m sure it’s the same for every team. Which team can really afford to take the risk. It’s also true the Raiders defense was awful despite Macks presence. To improve the defense we need better coaching and players. I see the coaching under Guenther has improved markedly. Shoring up the secondary with mature talent could do wonders . This costs money. I would rather spread the money over the entire team rather than one player. Mack has to understand this and make room for overall team improvement. I doubt that there’s any team willing to pay Mack the guaranteed money he’s looking for.

    1. I completely agree that I would rather use the money on 2-4 players rather than just one but I disagree in the fact that no one would pay him. It’s of my personal belief that his stock is at a premium (due to his age and production) and there will never be another time where we even TALK about getting two 1s or a 1 and a 2 for him. He deserves his money, no doubt, but I’d rather build a potential dynasty in the long term rather than pay him a ton for a couple of years and handcuff our FA options.

  3. Mack does need to get paid but I disagree that he’s been underpaid for the last 3 years. He is paid according to the CBA of where he was drafted. He agreed to his contract and knew what he was agreeing to. Yes once he plays out his contract then he should be paid based on his production but he knew every detail up to this point especially when it came to his 5th year option.

    1. The fifth year option is robbery and pure greed if you cannot evaluate a player in 4 years you shouldnt be a GM. Then they have the franchise tag. And when you reach Dpy and 2 position all pro 1st team yes you can outplay a previously set and determined rookie scale.

  4. Heres what is going on and nothing more. RM Diesnt negotiate unless said player is in camp…not on time just in camp.
KM doesnt want to do training camp and risk injury with or without a contract and is talented enough to pick up the defense quickly and he knows it. He will report around the same time as Penn did last year and be given a 21/yr million contract. …

  5. Time to trade this future HOF’er. Sorry, time to build a perennial winner. Just win Baby!
