Schefter Shares Latest on Raiders, Jakobi Meyers Trade Rumors

With two weeks until the start of the season, the Raiders have wiggled their way into a contract dispute with veteran wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, who reportedly requested a trade in recent weeks.

The report of his trade request came on Monday, but the belief is that the request was made well before this week.

The Raiders aren’t expected to trade Meyers, but it isn’t clear how Meyers will respond if he doesn’t have a new deal by the start of the season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter weighed in on the situation on Tuesday and he said the Raiders have had one team reach out to them about Meyers’ availability.

“My understanding is the Raiders had one team reach out to them, they wanted the Raiders do pay some of the $11 million salary and the Raiders were not willing to do that and they’re not looking to deal him,” Schefter said on the Pat McAfee Show.

“Jakobi Meyers is going to be there barring something unforeseen happening. They could decide a few games in that he’s not happy, he’s not behaving well, but they don’t want to trade him. They view him as a productive player. He’s been a really good player and he’s entering the last year of his deal, so they want to hold on to him in Vegas and right now they have no intention of trading him.”

There are a few details that stand out in Schefter comments on Meyers, and one is the impression he gives that not many teams have inquired about a trade.

Just as noteworthy is the detail Schefter dropped on Meyers’ salary.

Based on Schefter’s report, the one team that was interested in Meyers didn’t want to take on all of his $11 million contract for the 2025 season.

The implication there would be that if no teams are willing to pay Meyers $11 million this year, where would he find a team willing to pay him $20+ million after the season?

It’s possible that Schefter’s information was a little leverage play by someone in the Raiders’ organization, or maybe the veteran wide receiver isn’t worth as much as he believes he is.

There could also be teams interesting in Meyers, as there was this time last year, but aren’t in the market to trade for him two weeks before the start of the season.

Whatever the case, it seems unlikely the Raiders will trade their no. 1 wideout before the start of the season, but flagship radio host Q Myers talked on Tuesday about a couple of scenarios where he could see a trade actually happening.

  1. If there is any offer that comes close to a 3rd rounder even if we pay his entire salary take it. Every transaction this off-season has been a losing proposition. From draft picks to FAs signed to FAs lost every transaction has been a loss. Case in point the 5th rounder given to Cleveland for Kenny Pickett when he was clearly going to be released. Maybe a conditional 7th with the condition he’s on the roster all 17 games would’ve been appropriate.

  2. I agree with Nation. Who are the knuckleheads making the decisions in this organization? You choose to pass on a qb in the draft, knowing Geno is mid 30’s (fcs is basically juco), you donate a 5th round pick to Cleveland and get nothing in return (Pickett was behind both rookies in Cleveland). Why can’t we ever get anyone with common football sense to make decisions for the Raiders?

    1. Pickett wasn’t behind both, he’s been injured all offseason. Pick it was the first round Talent he’s definitely better than any backup we have and that’s what he was brought in for. You figured on a news site you people would actually read the news.

      1. “He’s been injured all offseason”. More reason to question why we gave up a 5th round pick for this guy??? I think we overpaid. This GM must have learned under Gruden. Squander all draft picks.
