The Raiders dropped to the sixth pick in the draft after Sunday’s 19-14 win over the Jaguars, and their chances of drafting University of Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders have been dealt a massive setback.
There have been rumors that Shedeur does not want to be draft by the New York Giants (assuming the get the no. 1 pick), but comments from Shedeur this week suggest otherwise.
Talking with his brother, Shiloh, at a practice this week, Shedeur seemed to have a strong inclination to where he is going to play next year in the NFL.
“We know where we going, baby. You’ll see ’em in the cleats later on this week,” Shedeur said, presumably referring to the Giants, who hold a comfortable lead in the race for the no. 1 pick.
“The team might trade up,” Shiloh answered.
“You can’t get higher than one,” Shedeur then said with a laugh.
A few months ago, Deion Sanders said there were teams that he did not want his sons to play for, but he has backed away from that position in recent months.
”We’ve talked about it extensively. I talk to a multitude of teams at practice every day. I want what’s best for him, but I want him to be happy, as well,” Sanders told Shannon Sharpe on the Nightcap podcast in September.
”You really don’t get to dictate where your son gets to go because there’s a draft process,” Sanders continued. “But you know us, you know how we are. We know who ain’t trying to win in the NFL. You know who’s consistently in the basement year after year. You don’t want that situation for your kid… but you got to know that Shedeur is suited for adversity.”
As for the Raiders, they travel to New Orleans this weekend and another win would most likely take them out of the conversation for a first-round quarterback.
Based on the reaction from owner Mark Davis after last week’s win, the Raiders will welcome the opportunity to miss out on the top quarterbacks in this year’s draft in exchange for stacking one more win on the season total.
