Tafur: Nothing in Jon Gruden’s History Says Raiders Will Start a Rookie QB in 2020

Will the Raiders stick with Derek Carr or are they considering other options as they prepare to land in Las Vegas in a few months?

While the fan base is clearly split on Carr, the difficult decision for the Raiders if they move on from Carr who would they move on to?

“Nothing in Jon Gruden’s history says he’s going to start a rookie quarterback,” The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said on the State of the Nation podcast this week. “So I think that’s the other part of the issue is like you may get one of those guys you can bring along, but I can’t see Jon drafting somebody in the first round and plugging him right away. That doesn’t seem like the kind of coach he is.”

“I think it’s wide open,” Tafur said of the Raiders impending quarterback decision. “I think there’s no one who knows what’s going to happen, not even Jon, so it definitely will be one of the big storylines this offseason.”

One dynamic to Gruden’s decision might (or maybe should) be his own job security with the Raiders. His contract was paraded around as a 10-year, $100 million deal, but no sane contract negotiator wouldn’t have an included an “out” for the Raiders somewhere before 10 years if things go sideways. Does Gruden definitely have a throwaway year to spend on a mid-round quarterback from the 2020 draft?

Neither Gruden or owner Mark Davis are interested in a third consecutive rebuilding year – especially while moving into a new market and a new stadium. So is there a better veteran quarterback than Derek Carr on the free market?

Will Gruden want to hitch his future with the Raiders to a second-tier quarterback in the 2020 draft or continue to work with Carr?

Carr has shown improvement in each of the past two years (despite throwing to one of the weakest WR groups in the league) and has proven he can play at an MVP level. Gruden said when he was hired that he will have failed if he can’t win with Carr so it will be interesting to see if he still feels that way (or ever did in the first place).

Just a guess: Gruden will probably stick with Carr for another year and focus the remainder of his attention on DeShone Kizer and Nathan Peterman. If he really is a quarterback guru, Gruden should have no problem developing one of them, right?

  1. I’m sure the Raiders will have a number of quarterbacks to compete for the position at this point I don’t think any of the quarterbacks are going to beat out car for the starting spot all organizations out to make money and win football games are going to look for greatness when you have good you stick with what you have car has been with Gruden for the third year now I think the Improvement is came a long way with the right weapons in the right spots how to make smart decisions the way he is playing is what Gruden wants and if Raider fans I’m sure the Raiders will have a number of quarterbacks to compete for the position at this point I don’t think any of the quarterbacks are going to beat out car for the starting spot all organizations out to make money and when football games are going to look for greatness when you have good you stick with what you have car has been with Gruden for the third year now I think the improvement is came a long way with the right weapons in the right spot I can make smart decisions to weigh is playing is what Gruden wants and if Raider fans hang in there it’s what they want to

    1. I Think Keeping Dc4 is a no Brainerd for Gruden. He Knows none of the rookies can compete with a six year veteran.DC4 Needs weapons who can get open downfield, and this is the draft to find them.

  2. Carr has never had a solid receiving core (Crabtree and Cooper were good, but not great) and worse yet he’s never had a D.
6 years in the league and never in the same system for more then two years also isn’t ideal.
Give him a WR1 and a burner to add to Williams, Renfrow, Waller and Morreau, fix the D and let’s finally see what Carr can do with a complete team before we toss him aside.
    Carr deserves another year.

  3. Arm yourself with new offensive play book, new QB and couple new wide receivers, preseason will tell if needed, have to work all together, no feel sorries for anyone, if Gruden will keep his and teams prestige it will have to be preseason, it didn’t look like Car and his receivers were up to task…careful not to waste a opportunity in 2020

  4. Compare Cooper and Crabtree AND Cook to what Wentz, Russell, Lamar, Allen are throwing to.

He’s had talent. He wasted it after the injury.

    1. Your right after the injury he has not been the same, Crabtree was his go to guy not Cooper, Cooper was to soft we should have kept Seth Roberts, also we need a better DC Gunther system does not work as for qb’s that could be there— capernick, Alex Smith if healthy,Bridgewater,Fitzpatrick, an get two quality backups or cam Newton as a starter.

  5. I believe we need to give Carr one more year. It’s not fair to him or to the fans that we get rid of him when we all know we never really gave him a true number one receiver. And with Williams hurt for most of the year I believe we would all like to see what he can do with a true number 1 WR. I also believe we have more things to worry about like our defense I believe in the six years that he’s been there we never had a top-15 defense that’s where the problem lies.

  6. The Raiders draft this year reminds me of how Dallas built their Super Bowl team after they traded Hershel Walker. Mayock knows how to judge college talent, and don’t forget the safety that got hurt in the first game was considered by most as the most talented of all three first round picks. If he nails one more draft this year we are going to dominate.

  7. Yes carr needs a defence he deserves a team that is competitive 0n both sides and gruden kinda not a good coach if he sticks with Gunther carr is not the problem mayock is what we need to keep Gruden not so much like he is some QBs guru that’s the best joke I’ve heard of.in years. Maybe carr should hold out for a trade to a team that wants to win cause if the eaiders go somewhere else that’s atleast 3 more years of being the worst team in football and I cant take that to much more I’m getting old and close to being dead

  8. Defense wins championships. Stick with Carr and build a defense. The Raiders lost by 30 ,3 games in a row! Get Carr a #1 WR…& Derek needs to show more grit. Winning works.

  9. Don´t think Carr is the Problem. Stats are good if not great compared to the lack of Weapons he got. FIX THE D.
4000 are good, 8 int solid! So what is everybody talking about. even Rogers didnt manage to do better if Teams around him were Crap. i mean Compton, Morrow, Brown ….. and so on! Sry they woundnt get a single shot starting elsewhere even if they woud pay for it.

    greetings from Europe!
