It’s no secret that the Raiders want to add a quarterback in the upcoming draft, but it’s also not a secret that the cost to move up to one of the top 5 picks in the draft is going to cost a lot more than what the Raiders can probably afford.
If the Raiders aren’t able to get one of the consensus top four quarterbacks in the draft, it’s going to be interesting to see how they view the next tier of quarterbacks that includes Michael Penix Jr. and Bo Nix.
Some have suggested the Raiders might try to make a move for Penix by trading into the latter half of the first round, but now it sounds like the chances are increasing that the Raiders will take Penix with the 13th pick.
“The whispers are getting louder that the Raiders just might take Washington QB Michael Penix Jr. [with the 13th-overall pick],” Raiders insider Vic Tafur reported this week at The Athletic. “Penix’s stock has risen since he had clean medicals at the NFL Scouting Combine. He has the best deep ball in the draft but, in our book, is still a bit of a project mechanically to be taken this high.”
What would be interesting to know is where the “whispers” around Penix and the Raiders are coming from.
Is there a belief within the organization that the Raiders are going to draft Penix or is it simply a hot rumor outside of the building?
Draft rumors are going to take a lot of twists and turns over the next two weeks, and it’s not uncommon for teams to intentionally leak information that isn’t accurate.
It’s worth noting that Penix received good feedback regarding his health at the NFL combine, and it could be that a team will be willing to overlook his injury history and make a move for him within the first 15 picks of the draft.
Will that team be the Raiders?
Most likely not… but never say never.

Let’s go Raidersssssss, we got to do all the right Pics draft day. Let’s make the Raidersssssss great agIn💯☠️💯☠️
It would be a mistake to take Penix at thirteen. The Raiders have more needs than just QB, and they need to take the best player at one of those needs at thirteen. There are two CBs and maybe two offensive tackles that should be available at thirteen. The best play to get Penix would to copy the move that Baltimore used to acquire Lamar Jackson. Trade whatever, except next year’s. #1 to get back in the first round late, and take Penix. In theory, we will be picking much later in next year’s draft, so we should make a QB play this year. Personally, I like Bo Nix over Penix, and of the group after the prize three, is the only one I would take at thrteen.
