Davante Adams Says Raiders Ending Still Irritates Him: “That Wasn’t Because of Me”

Davante Adams’ time with the Raiders came with an awkward end in October of last year, and it has been a talking point that hasn’t gone away in the 10 months since he was traded to the Jets.

Adams still makes references to his time in Las Vegas, although he has never shared specifically what pushed him away from the Raiders.

Last week, Adams referred to his time with the Raiders as “a dark moment” in his life and said, “all of us were pretty miserable over there.”

Presumably, Adams was referring to his time with former head coach Josh Mcdaniels, but it’s a fact that he requested a trade from the Raiders while Antonio Pierce was the head coach.

At the time, The Athletic’s Vic Tafur said Adams was at minimum “disingenuous” with some of the comments he made, and it seemed from the outside that Adams framed his departure differently than what actually happened.

This week, Adams was a guest on the The Pivot and acknowledged that his ending with the Raiders is something he still thinks about.

“At the end of the day all I’ve done is try to find happiness and try to find a way to win and enjoy this game that I grew up loving and has presented me with so much,” Adams said on The Pivot. “So I’ve been trying to just compliment the game the way it has complimented me. Unfortunately, in order to do so, I’ve had to detach from certain organizations.”

“It may have even happened a little nastier than what I would have liked. It was never indented to be anything malicious or negative,” Adams continued. “It was always supposed to be a smooth transition, which is why I think the Raiders [ending] irritates me the most because that wasn’t because of me at all.”

Asked by host Ryan Clark if it bothers him that fans still attack his character after the way things came to an end with the Raiders, Adams acknowledged that “it hurts” but said he doesn’t care about the opinion of people that didn’t understand his situation in Las Vegas.

“It hurts because as a person that’s a good guy at heart you want people to think and feel good things about you at all times, especially when that’s who you are to your core, so it would be a shame if people walk around thinking that I’m some diva or looking for attention or whatever it is that they think that’s not accurate,” Adams said.

“So it does bother me to a certain extent, but I got to his point in my life by not caring truly what people think about me and not letting that have any bearing on how I move forward,” Adams continued. “So again, I’d love for you to think good things but if you can’t take a deep enough dive and be realistic enough with even the small amounts of evidence you have about my situation, if you can’t take that and make sense of it, why I feel the way I do, or I made the decisions I made… then that’s not the opinion that I care about anyway.”

Davante Adams hasn’t talked a lot about his time with the Raiders, but he has taken plenty of jabs at the organization since being traded.

In January, Adams talked about “contributing factors” that led to his trade request in October, and he elaborated a little on those details with The Athletic’s Mike Silver in April.

The first issue Adams said he ran into with the Raiders was the decision by the organization to dump Derek Carr…

“If I was Scooby-Doo, I would’ve went, ‘Urrrrrrrrrrr?’ Like, you literally brought me here, you knew the reason why … me going there for Derek; everybody in the world knew that. And then to be in a situation where now you just pull him from me after we had a very productive year? That was the first kind of confused moment that I had.

And then things continued that next year … obviously what they decided to do and some of the moves they decided to make on offense. And things continued the next year again. (Initially), I was trying to feel good about it, more than actually what I was presented with — just the facts of who’s the head coach, who’s my receiver coach, who is the offensive coordinator, who’s calling plays, what the defense looks like, all that stuff.

Once we got to (2024), it was just a lot of the same. And it was just clear to me that we weren’t being set up to be put in a situation where we could really go and win at a convincing rate. And it was time for me to go.”

  1. Yah Devante, you still irritate the $@@$ out of me. We paid you , you stopped playing because you sent jimmy g to the pine bench. Oh, now he’s your good buddy. You are a freak pal! Just retire dude your days are so behind you. Just zip your trap and catch balls. Seems your qb has back issues no problem jimmy aka Clark Kent will save you ha ha ha last place in the NFC west dirtbag!

  2. The asshole faked an injury and quit on the team. That’s a cowardly move and if he thinks any different, he’s being a hypocrite also. Must’ve been some kind of miracle that happened when he got to the jets. All of a sudden, no more injury.

    1. Exactly,
Go watch the win against KC 2 years ago. Hes dropping passes, not blocking on a screen pass. Hes a cancer & a flipping baby. He acts like he’s a first ballot HOF player

      1. Speaking of Kansas City, last year in KC , Aiden O’Connell marched us down the field as time was running out , and had us set up for a game-winnimg FG, before a botched snap ruined it.
The year before , we steam-rolled the Chiefs on Xmas day. I honestly believe we will sweep the Chiefs this year. Go Raiders !

    1. Pre-season 2024: coach pierce tells the media everyone will play leading up to the game. DA tells Pierce he won’t play. This is the opposite of a team play, this is the opposite of a leader. This is the definition of a diva. He sulked like a 13 yr old boy rather than man up. His character was revealed yet he still blames others. Deep down, he knows the truth. He just doesn’t have the humility to speak it

  3. The responses on here are terrible. First off I didn’t like the trade to bring him here. It was way too much. Second the big contract is on the FO not DA. Realize whom you’re truly mad at. The FO effed up the entire situation 💯. From Mark Davis to Josh McDaniels ( I don’t count Dave Z since he wasn’t in control of anything). I was truly surprised when the draft rolled around in 24 that Telesco didn’t try to trade DA. It only drove down the compensation we’d get back. AP & TT should’ve never been hired as HC & GM. But the entire situation was caused by Mark hiring McDaniels to begin with.

    1. “realize who you’re mad it”. LOL. What are you …a therapist? ( hope not, cuz you can’t listen) DA quit on the team, period. End of story. Plus, he threw teammates and his coach AP, under the bus. Not to mention all the missed passes. so yeah, we’re mad at him for being an amateur, while getting paid like an All-Pro. You want to talk and hate on the owner? Fine, we can do that. Mark Davis has made plenty of mistakes, but don’t condescend to us with psycho-babble.

  4. No Devante, if it acts, looks, and smells like a diva it is. And that was you to the core, man. You wanted a say so on who the QB would be! You were getting paid handsomely just shut your trap and catch the ball regardless of whom is throwing it! I was against the stupid trade that brought u to the Raiders, bc u were on the tail end of your career.

  5. I had high hopes for Dante. Yes, he came into a bad situation, then they cut DC whom Dante came to play with. BUT, be a professional. Don’t whine. It’s not becoming to not take any responsibility and simply blame everyone else when you could have been part of the solution, but instead you were part of the problem. Then suddenly Jimmy G is a great QB, when you said he was bad when you were playing with him on the Raiders? Seriously?

  6. Once a Raider always a Raider will never apply to DA any clown that would have a Taco Bell in his house can’t be playing with a full deck he’s at the end and will never get past the divisional round, not really more than a above average receiver definitely not HOF worthy. Good riddance the Raiders are better off without the quitter!
