Gruden: Derek Carr Is Wearing Me Out With Work Ethic

Jon Gruden is known for his long hours at the office. So is Derek Carr.

So which one gets to the office earlier and stays later these days?

Gruden was on Fox Sports Radio on Thursday and he answered the question – even if only a bit tongue in check. Speaking with JT The Brick, Gruden said Carr’s work ethic is everything it was cracked up to be.

“We’ve been pushing each other,” Gruden said. “We’ve had a blast. I mean he’s wearing me out. He’s knocking on my door at 9 o’clock at night already. I’m waking up at 5 in the morning, there he is again. He loves it. He has a passion for football and winning… he’s going to have a heck of a year.”

Once upon a time, Gruden was known to set his alarm for 3:17 in the morning. Now in Oakland again, Gruden apparently carpools with defensive coordinator Paul Guenther to the office each morning at 4 AM.

Back in 2015, Donald Penn told SiriusXM Radio that Carr used to beat the coaching staff to the building at 5 AM. There was also this tweet about Carr coming into the building early on his off day in his rookie year…

  1. Gruden has the creativity, Carr has the skill. If these 2 can coexist, as all signs currently say they can, Carr will take that next step and become one of the best is the game. A good working relationship between coach and QB is the most vital relationship on any football team.
