Jakobi Meyers Offers Light-Hearted Response to Contract Negotiations with Raiders

It was reported last week that Raiders’ wide receiver Jakobi Meyers had requested a trade, and every indication from the team and insiders around the team have been that he is not going to be traded – at least not before the start of the season.

If Meyers’ contract isn’t extended before the November 4 trade deadline, there’s a chance the Raiders will reconsider trade opportunities, but it’s worth keeping in mind the Raiders will probably get a fourth or fifth-round compensatory pick for Meyers if he leaves in free agency after the season.

For that reason, it might take a third or fourth-round pick to get Meyers in a trade before the deadline.

On Wednesday, Meyers was asked about his trade request and where things stand with his contract situaiton.

As he has done from the start, Meyers handled the questions like a professional.

“I asked [for a trade], they said ‘no.’ That’s where that stopped,” Meyers said with a laugh. “I’m going to keep doing my job until something shakes out either way. I don’t know which way it’s going to go, but I’ll be ready for whatever.”

Asked if he was confident a deal is going to get done, Meyers didn’t sound optimistic.

“I wouldn’t say I’m pretty confident. I really don’t know where it’s going to go,” Meyers said. ” Like I said, I’m ready to go if you want me to go. I’m ready to play if you need me to play.”

Asked if he was happy with the Raiders, Myers said he is happy but can be happy anywhere.

“It’s a job,” Meyers answered. “At the end of the day, I’m happy to be doing my job with my boys, but I could be happy anywhere.”

Lastly, Meyers was asked if contract negotiations have been a distraction to this point. He said from his standpoint they have not, adding that he rarely thinks about the business side of his relationship with the team.

“It’s not too hard, honestly, because I spend most of my time in here or on the field,” Meyers said. “So it’s out of my mind until probably for like 30 minutes of my day I’m like, ‘Hold on, I didn’t get paid yet.’ But for the most part, I’m cool.”

  1. Sounds like a great guy the antithesis of Adam’s, Moss, Cooper and many other Raider players over the years. I hope he makes some coin.
