The Raiders fired offensive coordinator Luke Getsy on Sunday night and one of the popular narratives around the team over the next few weeks (or more) is going to be that Getsy was Antonio Pierce’s scapegoat for the team’s 2-7 start.
Only Pierce knows why he fired Getsy, but was there anyone around the team that believed Getsy was doing a good job or that he was going to be part of the solution on offense?
What Pierce deserves criticism for was hiring Getsy in the first place. There were red flags around Getsy as a coordinator in Chicago and the Raiders ignored those warnings in large part because they were short on options.
The organization was slow to decide on Pierce as the head coach after the 2023 season and that situation trickled down to not hiring an offensive coordinator until February. By that time, many of the top OC candidates were already settled into jobs for the 2024 season.
We know Getsy wasn’t the Raiders’ first choice, but we also know one of Getsy’s strongest supporters in the building at the time was Davante Adams.
Adams was not in a great place with the Raiders after the 2023 season, and it seems reasonable to believe Getsy’s hiring was, to some degree, an effort to appease the All-Pro wide receiver.
Listening to Adams talk about his former wide receivers coach in Green Bay, there is no doubt where he stood on the team’s decision to hire Getsy.
“We got a really good system on offense now and it’s something that I’m very familiar with,” Adams said during the offseason on The Rush with Maxx Crobsy. “It’s literally the same verbiage, everything, the same playbook because you know [Luke] Getsy was my wide receiver coach and he took what we did in Green Bay to the Bears and they didn’t have the best cast to make it look like it work, but it’s a hell of a system.”
Ultimately, Getsy was ineffective in his nine months with the Raiders, and Adams had one foot out the door all the way back in August.
Those dynamics, combined with significant injures across the roster, will most likely lead to more Raider coaches and executives looking for jobs in another couple of months.

Neither Getsy nor Pierce should have been hired in the first place. LMAO watching Mad Maxx sulk about losing. After all, Crosby did threaten to force a trade unless AP was retained! That’s why a competent owner does not let the players dictate what coaches are hired! But, the team is ran by an incoming owner.
You have got to be kidding me. Joke.
What could the Raiders to change this situation?
Nothing! Good drafts and retirement of Mahomes will make the Raiders a winning team in 2030!
Getsy’s QBs the last year and a half have been Justin Fields, Tyson Bagent, Gardner Minshew, Aiden O’Connell, and Desmond Ridder. NONE of which should be a starter in the NFL. But yes, it’s Getsy’s fault. Was it also his fault they didn’t try to get a rookie QB to build around in the off-season?
Typical raider culture. I mean what do you expect from expect from a team who’s owner really believes the 26yo child he’s dating loves him because of who he is. Ap has caused division and strife on that team since last season. He didn’t like Jimmy G. He benched GM when things got tough he did everything but take the blame. Sad to see raiders in a terrible state but look at the people in charge.
Bring back jack del rao, he was the best coach the raiders have had in a long long time.
