Raiders Top 2 Head Coaching Candidates Revealed by Mystery Inside Source?

The Raiders have interviewed 14 candidates for their head coaching vacancy and the popular front runners to get the job are Seahawks offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak and Broncos quarterbacks coach Davis Webb.

There are other names being tossed around as potential favorites, but Kubiak and Davis seem to be the hottest names in Las Vegas as of Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, they will have to wait for Kubiak and Davis to be eliminated from the playoffs before they can be hired, and that dynamic led to an interesting post from an X account many Raider fans have become familiar with over the years.

During Saturday’s divisional round game between the Bills and Broncos, the “AFL Godfather” account tweeted that the Raiders will have to wait at least another week for their head coach. The implication being that the coach the Raiders will ultimately hire will be playing in a conference championship game the following week.

What was interesting about the tweet, though, was that it posted long before the outcome was determined on the Rams/Bears game.

While no one seems to know exactly who the “AFL Godfather” account belongs to, Raider Nation Radio host Q Myers said this week he believes it is someone well-connected in the Raider organization.

“It goes back to the AFL Godfather’s tweet that he put out that you’re going to have to wait another week for some news on the Raiders head coaching search. I don’t shake a stick at that. I don’t close the blind eyes of that and say, ‘Oh, he doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He’s somebody that’s in the building. I know he knows me,'” Myers said on the Locked on Raiders podcast on Tuesday (YouTube link).

“I probably know him without knowing that that’s him. We exchanged DMs before. I know he’s got respect for me and my work. I got respect for him and his work, even though I don’t really know who he is by name. But apparently, he’s a guy around the Raiders organization. So I know that he knows what’s going on inside the building.”

On his Locked on Raiders Squad Show podcast later in the day, Myers revisited the conversation and added a few more thoughts.

“I also have to acknowledge that the tweet from AFL Godfather and I still do not know exactly who that is. I know that there’s someone in the building of the Raiders organization and I know that they know me and I’m sure I know them. Like I’ve had conversations with them. I just don’t know that that’s their Twitter handle… During the Rams game, it tweeted out that Raider Nation was going to have to wait another week for their head coach,” Myers said.

“And so I’m assuming, and that’s just an assumption, take it for what it’s worth. I’m assuming that that means that they’re leaning towards someone either in Seattle or someone in Denver. But again, that’s just me reading a tweet and thinking out loud, putting the two together… the tweet came out during the Rams game. So I’m assuming that they were talking about teams that had already advanced. The Rams hadn’t advanced yet. So that’s why I’m not putting the Rams in that category. The tweet came out after Seattle had already advanced [and] after Denver had already advanced.”

“The Rams were still in a dogfight trying to win their game. So that’s why I assume that it’s, again, it’s just an assumption and it could mean nothing at all. I’m just going off of a recent history with that Twitter account that I know comes from somewhere in the building… that has been one of our biggest mysteries. Everyone that covers the team will stand there on the sideline. We’ll see a tweet from AFL Godfather and it’ll be like a picture of practice, and I’m looking around and I’m like, ‘Okay, what is that? They just took a picture. They literally just took, I’m standing in the same room… He’s got to be there.”

For what it’s worth, Myers’ co-host Lincoln Kenndy said he has a theory on the identity of the “AFL Godfather” but didn’t share his guess on the podcast…

“I have always had an idea of who it is,” Kennedy said. “We’ll talk about. I’ve always had an idea who it is.”

  1. Shrouded in mystery! I have DMd AFL GF a rather long message and received a “read” return message. I don’t necessarily feel he has to be “in” the Building. He obviously has an affinity and love for Mr. Davis. His knowledge of the past and small nuances that are very intricate and intimate make me believe he is not a super young man. I feel like Amy Trask may have the best idea, of the Identity. Amy is one of the most intelligent to ever be in that Organization. Lastly, “AFL GODFATHER” does not have to be a male……
