With the Raiders Expected to “Clean House” After the Season, Here’s What to Look For Next

After a 48-9 beating by the Chiefs, the Raiders are all but certain to clean house after the final game of the regular season.

Maybe even sooner.

With the expectation being that a new general manager will be in the building next year, the Raiders probably aren’t going to drag Mike Mayock along into January. It wouldn’t benefit him or the organization to keep him around. If Mayock isn’t going to be a part of next season’s rebuild, why keep him around to talk about it?

After Mayock is gone, Raiders’ owner Mark Davis can start making other decisions – like who his quarterback is going to be next year. According to The Athletic’s Vic Tafur, a decision on Carr is expected before Davis decides on his next head coach. As of Sunday evening, Tafur thinks a long-term deal for Carr with the Raiders probably isn’t in the cards at the moment.

If a new deal isn’t coming for Carr, it will be interesting to see if he is willing to play out the final year of his contract in a Raiders uniform without a new deal.

Once Carr’s future is figured out, several reports have indicated that Davis will most likely look for another HC/GM combo that resembles what Jon Gruden had with Mayock. In other words, the Raiders would find a head coach and that head coach would pick his GM.

If Davis wants to pick a head coach ahead of a GM, that’s probably a good indication that he is looking at high-profile candidates. Guys like Jim Harbaugh and Dabo Swinney come to mind.

On a side note, the days of Davis staying almost exclusively in the shadows might be coming to an end. Going all the way back to former head coach Tony Sparano, Davis reportedly enjoyed having weekly meetings with his head coach and there are rumors that he had some involvement with the coaching staff this year after Gruden checked out.

So with all that in mind, which coaching candidate would be reputable enough to bring in his own GM, but be comfortable enough with Davis to keep him involved in football operations?

Figure that out and you may have solved the riddle.

  1. Doesn’t matter who coaches this team. Doesn’t matter who the players are. The Raiders are losers. 48 -9 says it all.

  2. I know Carr isn’t the only reason the Raiders are not winning , but it would be nice to get a new QB

  3. That is great news everyone in coaching staff needs to leave. Embarassing how this teams performance has been over the years.

  4. I would suggest it might be better to choose the head coach and let him decide whether he wants carr or not.

  5. If Davis signs Carr to an extension I would assume Dabo is coming to Vegas! If not I hoe we can scrape Harbough from MU. I’d rather start brand new, new QB.

  6. Mark davis is going to destroy the franchise. Smh I think I’m done being a raidets/nfl fan. I can’t invest my time and money on this dumpster fire

  7. How’s that Vegas air, Carr? You disrespected Oakland when you left (over a handful of idiotic fans), and we still cheer for you from Oakland. You breathe that Vegas casino stench, bcz that is how you are playing! How many times did you stay in the collapsing pocket yesterday?!? Roll the “f” out and make something happen! Your job is to make something happen.
I was pro-Carr for so long, but bcz of the losses in December and Carr’s role in theses losses, with his demeanor on the sideline – bro, you got to go! You are too busy crying and pouting over your (racist, sexist) daddy, Gruden.
As of now, Carr, is the bad air in LV – hell, the entire state of Nevada. HA!
Whatever Davis decides, he needs to make sure to get someone who is capable of coaching the talent in the locker room, keeping them disciplined on AND OFF the field. Better play calling (FYI – EVERYONE knows 28 gets the ball on the first play of every **** game!), young enough to realize the game is no longer played how it once was in 2002 (Gruden style). Go get Harbaugh!

    1. The comment that Carr disrespected Oakland when he left is totally insane. Carr had nothing to do with leaving Oakland. That would be managements decision.

      1. I DON’T BLAME IT DERRICK, THAT RIGHT SIDE OF LINE HAS BEEN F-up-Since Trent Brown was released and guess everybody forgot about 2016 and Gruden shouldn’t have never let Kalil Mack Go

    2. Don’t blame Vegas. You guys easily forget the challenges. Gruden axed. Riggs gone. Waller injured. Jacobs. Drake. Injured. No real running backs. Very few receivers. Horrible offensive line. Defense has gotten worse each week. But you all wNt to put it all on Carr. Give him a line a defense running backs and top receivers. Then get back to me

  8. Sometimes it’s not the Head Coach or GM that holds a team back from being a true contender but the Owner himself.

  9. At this point in the season my Raiders are more then likely not to make the playoffs but in Regards to head coach and the GM job I Really believe it’s not going to be Jim or Dabo and they really need to move on with Derek Carr my guess for new head coach would be a former Raider in the organization Gus Bradley should get fired as well

    1. Many of you think “good QB’s” grow on trees, which in reality is far from the truth. Carr is not Brady, not L Jackson, P Mahomes or J Allen. But he is not Watson, Garrapolo or Mayfield either. There is a lot more to being QB than your okay on the field. Yes, the bottom line is to win and Carr had that ability. How about drafting better skilled players at the top of the draft or focusing on the defense? How about making the team better around Carr b/c at this point it doesn’t matter if we have Lawrence, Fields, Wilson, Lance, etc. we aren’t winning this year.

  10. Well as a Raiders huge fan since 1968.WOW. This chiefs game was very sad. No way No how. Is how I felt. Can’t blame one certain player. The whole team played very badly. No deeee. Period. CARR WAS TEEEEER EEE BO. OWNER MARK IF U SEE THIS. DADDY’S NOT HAPPY WITH YOU. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE GET A YOUNG Q.B. WITH MOBILITY. FIRST B4 U TAKE YOUR NEXT ****. FIRE YOUR G.M. PLAY CALLING IS TELEGRPHIC. THEN RUGGS RUINED OUR OFFENSE. FIX IT BY NEXT YEAR. SPEND SOME YO MONEY ON WIDE RECEIVER’S A NEW Q.B. LINEBACKERS. PASS DEFENSE. MAINLY A Q.B. FANS DIDN’T DESERVE SEEING THE RAIDERS LITERALLY QUIT. I’D PLAY MARIOTA. BENCH CARR IMMEDIATELY.

  11. If the Raiders can get “something” for Derek Carr, they should. He is currently under contract through the end of next year. They should “see” what they have in Mariota and what, if anything” he can bring to the table. Firing Mike Mayock is a no brainer. Then the tv analyst can go back to being an armchair analyst but not be paid as much or taken as seriously as before. The needs and flaws of this team are many but the first step, to returning to relevancy, is to hire some competent managerial people starting with a General Manager. The primary question becomes, who wants to take on this monumental task of rebuilding this team? The obvious candidate would be Louis Riddick but he already has a cushy job and why would he want this headache? As far as a new head coach, recycled losers should not be considered and college coaches should be rejected out of pocket. A new mindset is in order. Hopefully, Mark Davis can have someone with some football acumen advise him.

  12. Hello Randy Hill. Finally another 1968 Räder Fan. same as me. our good QB was Daryl Lamonica then kenny Stabler and George p blanda. Ah the good old days! RANDY Hill and I are RNFL. Fifty three years and counting. RIP Al Davis!

  13. Lots of the kind of hate we’ve gotten for 20 years. It is an impossible game to play if you are being picked off from a blind in the distance by the NFL. Take ’em down with you, Chucky!

  14. Perfect example of complete mismanagement. The one shining part of the raiders was their OL. So what does Gruden/Maycock do? Get rid of the best center and a pretty decent right guard. Who was a great left guard. Then they beg/ask the bears for Mack. How are all of those draft picks working out for Cooper and Mack working out? When was the last time they had z nasty dominant LB, that was feared? Jacobs is done, they spend 11/12 mill on a backup rb who is now out for the season
Every year its the same dog with different fleas. Oh year let’s get a new stadium that’ll make talent want to be in Vegas. It’s not the golf clubs it’s the freakin golfer.
I’ve been a fan since the first super bowl. It’s pathetic.

    1. Exactly. Putting the onus on only Carr is sick. He is a top quarterback in the nfl. Many teams are chomping at the bit to get him. For himself he might want to take a look at free agency and find a team that actually has top players
      on it.
Hey he might retire. He certainly has made alot of money.

  15. I’ve been a Raider fan since 1965! Win or lose, the Raiders are my team. I live in LA and the Raiders are still the most popular team here. When they play the Rams or the Chargers, SoFi Stadium is all Silver and Black. Be that as it may, RaiderNation needs a new owner. Al Davis was great when it was “Commitment to Excellence”. He the cursed his own team with “Just Win Baby!” The Davis ownership is the root of all that has gone bad. It hasn’t been the 1970s for a real long time and Mark should just take the money and let it go to better ownership.

Maybe Marcus Allen can get an investment group together and buy this once proud franchise and return it to what it once was.
