Marcus Mariota is healthy again and his red zone presence provided a much-needed spark in the Raiders 36-33 win over the Cowboys on Thanksgiving.
The Raiders have been inconsistent in the red zone this year and Mariota’s athleticism might be one of the solutions to the problem. Mariota is extremely difficult to defend around the goal line and he could also add an element to the Raiders’ offense similar to what Taysom Hill gives the New Orleans Saints.
Raiders interim head coach Rich Bisaccia was asked about how he plans to use Mariota going forward and it sounds like the former Heisman-winning quarterback is going to have an increased role in the weeks ahead.
“Without giving too much away, I think he is hopefully going to be a part of the packages as we go forward. He practices like he’s preparing to play all the time,” Bisaccia told members of the media this week. “I think [what] you saw Greg [Olson] do a great job of this week is, we had [Mariota] in there multiple times and he ends up scoring a touchdown for us because of his athletic ability and what he can do in certain situations, but certainly what we are asking him to do.”
Another benefit to using Mariota more around the goal line is that it should keep a few unnecessary hits away from Derek Carr. Yes, we saw Carr reach 19.84 MPH on Thursday, but his elusive rating isn’t one that the team should be inclined to call upon any more than necessary.

Mariota hasn’t been good in the NFL. The Titans moved on from him and replaced him with Ryan Tannehill… a QB who was brought in to manage a run-first offense. That should tell you something about him. His college success did not translate to professional success. Using him like NO uses Taysom Hill is his best chance to help the team.
And if you seriously think that Carr is the problem then you need to go read what numerous GMs have to say about him. Carr isn’t the problem. The Raiders incompetent front office is.

Jackson and before that you had Ruggs and no kind of trick play all season with having a fast receiver on the team. Use Mariota slot more. You guys just use him like one play per game. Use your players to win more games. If you’re gonna run the ball, run the ball. Don’t put Jacobs in for one run play then take him out for the next set of downs. I’m a huge Mariota fan, and I think he has has his named dragged without context, but I don’t think Carr is in any way a bad QB. I think both get their names dragged and are closer together in talent than people think. They are different styles. Mariota had slump similar to Carr had the three weeks before thanksgiving but difference is he got benched and suddenly Henry stopped dancing behind the line and started getting 150 yards per game. Yards are not a great measure though as they often reflect the type of offense they are in, and many defenses are designed to allow QBs to get yards while trying to create turnovers, and running down the clock and then tighten up in the rezone and hold them to 3 points. Car’s system is based on a lot of easy completions that move the chains, but he his weakness is in the redzone. Mariota and Carr are hard to compare because Mariota was in a run first system. He wasn’t given receivers who could win deep. When he got to the playoffs it was with Rishard Mathews as his # 1 WR and his second was Tajea sharpe. One was out of the league in a year, and the other’s next job was a practice squad. Mariota had to rely a lot more on rushing TDs which don’t get reported in box scores. His worst statistical season people forget he had 5 rushing TDs. There is a bias for passing, which sometimes reflects yards after catch ability of the players. Car is good at allowing his players to get yards after the catch but yards themselves are very flawed as a measure. I’m hoping Mariota starts on a different team next year. The mount I’ve seen both Carr and Mariota trashed, I’d rather him play elsewhere.

You are repeating the national media narrative on Mariota. It’s as lazy as calling Carr a bad QB. I’ve watched every snap of Mariota’s career and most people don’t know the context. He had 5 OCs in 5 years and a couple seasons he was playing hurt. He also had very little help Mariota’s Wide Receivers:
2015: Green-Beckham (out of the league in a year), Kendell Wright (out of the league in a year, Harry Douglas (out of the league immediately after release),
2016: Richard Matthews (out of the league in a year of quitting mid-season), Tajea Sharpe (next job on a practice squad).
2017:
Rishard Mathews (quit mid-season out of the league in a year).
Corey Davis (Rookie Year)
2018
Corey Davis (Got 881 yards)
Taywan Taylor (Couldn’t stick to the Browns roster the next year).
And Henry didn’t break out until After Mariota was benched. Tannihill (also benched by his previous team) benifited from Henry. Without him he has a 71 passer rating. With him this year he had a 90. Mariota was benched with a 92.
We need to run the ball more with josh and drake more the offense of line need to block better period

I believe that Carr has a great skill-set, but he is too inconsistent.
One day he’s confident and commands the field, then he’s off struggling to make a single completion. I blame the Raiders Organization for making so many changes in Carr’s career.
Say what you will, but It was Jack Del Rio and Reggie McKenzie that drafted Mack, Carr, and Cooper.
Shortly after, Raiders were in the playoffs.
The problem with Carr is that he can go into these funks where he just doesn’t show up to play. He did that against the Giants, costing us the win. Plus against the Chiefs and Bengals, he just failed to answer when the game was still close. He just won’t will the team to a win when needed. So, with that said, yes we can and should try and upgrade the position. He will have trade value at season’s end.
Carr has never had a pro bowl receiver or a good front line they drafted Rudd over cdlamb they trade Cooper we had and could of had those two relievers with waller match up nightmare don’t blame Carr he was a third round pick not a first he plays better then his draft pick and Marriott was 2nd pick and cut Carr is better I’m willing to bet since this is Vegas that everyone who commented here for Marriott are black get some receivers then talk about Carr
I agree. Titans wanted a traditional pocket passer. At Oregon he played a hurry up spread offense and was an on the run gunslinger. They forced him to play conservative and starved him of wr talent. If not for his TE Walker he would have had almost nothing to work with as a passer.
Carr can be gun shy at times, he has broken his leg and back so he won’t flip, dive or run recklessly like his younger days.
But how do these so called Raider’s fan forget we’re on our 6th OG and 3rd RT? The OL is below average which is why we’re not a top 10 offense like like
Last year. OL has to pass and run block much better than whatt they’re doing.
I’m all for getting Mariota more snaps but running game must elevate.

Mariota at Titans was terrible match up. It would be nice to see it Mariota would flourish as a Raider. If not. They should of traded him for value
