Beat Writer Says ‘Safe Mode’ Approach Coming for the Raiders at Quarterback

The Raiders are officially in the worst position at quarterback that they have been in since Jamarcus Russell.

Any hope that Aidan O’Connell might catch lightning in a bottle and turn the season around ended on Sunday when the second-year quarterback broke his thumb. Now the Raiders will turn back to Gardner Minshew and O’Connell can only hope that he gets a small window at the end of the season to leave an impression going into the offseason.

One quarterback option has been brought up for the Raiders is Bryce Young, and there’s an argument to be made that the former first-overall pick would be worth a mid-round pick.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini talked about Young this week and she believes there are teams interested in making a move for Young prior to the November 5 trade deadline.

“I think there’s a lot of coaches and GMs out there kind of licking their chops going, ‘Maybe we can do something with him.’” Russini reported this week.

The Raiders might be a team looking into Young, but they signed Desmond Ridder away from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad this week and at least one beat writer covering the team thinks Ridder’s signing is about as aggressive as the Raiders are going to get between now and the trade deadline.

“I think Desmond Ridder was a safe pick and right now I think the franchise is in a ‘play it safe’ mode,” Sports Illustrated insider Hondo Carpenter said this week on the Las Vegas Raiders Insider podcast.

What complicates any aggressive moves by the Raiders right now is the fact that no one in the building can feel particularly confident in terms of job security.

With Tom Brady now a part of the team’s ownership group, there is a feeling that sweeping changes could be coming at the end of the season.

If that’s a possibility, GM Tom Telesco might be a little limited on what Mark Davis will sign off on between now and the offseason.

  1. Chase Garbers Should have been given an opportunity before they signed Ridder. Telesco is a joke. Just like Getsky,Graham And AP. Graham will always get outcoached in the second half and the wrong personnel are on the Field. He got guys like, Gainer And Burney as well as Sam Webb that should be on the field instead of the scrubs he’s throwing in there. Especially continuing to get playing time to Wilson. He should be a Flippin burger somewhere.

  2. Dump Menshew and O’Connell. Get Bryce young in house quickly. Young and Ridder would work. Menshews short career is over and likewise O’connells. Go in the draft and get the best running back and receiver available. Having a ton of cap room can help fill the free agency signings.

  3. My belief, you don’t invest a lot in a young quarterback, unless you have the ability to develop them. A defensive head coach does not meet that criteria.

  4. Man who’s making these choices . The QB who played for Tennessee Ryan tennahill i probably spelled his last name wrong but i think this late and with a chance to play for a wild card spot might have been better . I wish the new QB luck a lot of luck. Should never have left Oakland…even worse should have never left California… California is RAIDER NATION… OAKLAND RAIDERS. Even sounds better…

  5. No Thanks Brice Young is the same size as my paperboy. He’s size is okay at the College level not the NFL. It’s been proven.

  6. I don’t imagine the Bengals would let go of Jake Browning. He deserves to be a starting QB. Ridder is safe, perhaps. The offense is a disaster. I’m very disappointed in Minshew. He needs glasses or something, he’s so off-target. It must be frustrating for the receivers and Bowers who are often able to gain separation.

  7. Very stupid that nobody is speaking of and bringing on to start Carter Bradley. The fact that the Raiders brought in another QB from a different team’s practice squad when they have I believe, a very capable QB on their own practice squad speaks as to the dysfunctional state this organization sits n shows they are nowhere near entering the state needed for success.

  8. Unquestionably believe that which you said. Your favorite justification seemed to be on the net the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I certainly get irked while people consider worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
