Rich Gannon: There Might Not be an Offense More Prepared to go Up Tempo Than The Raiders

One of the major observations on the Raiders offense in recent weeks is how slowly they seem to play, particularly early in games.

Some have wondered why the Raiders aren’t playing faster on offense and one of those people is former NFL MVP Rich Gannon.

“You could make the argument that there is not a quarterback, and maybe an offense, more prepared to go up-tempo no huddle than the Raiders,” Gannon said Wednesday on the Las Vegas 920 AM’s JT The Brick radio show.

“Think about what they have created there in terms of the one-word calls and they have five different speeds at which they play at. I just had this conversation with Coach Gruden this past offseason. They can go lightning fast, they can go up tempo. They’ve got all these different speeds and at some point when you’re struggling… why not go up tempo?”

For whatever reason, though, the Raiders haven’t made any noticeable efforts to change speeds on offense. As a result, defenses are able to get into coverages and make changes before the snap as needed. The few times the offense has shown some urgency, good things have happened.

As HOF quarterback Kurt Warner said last week… Derek Carr is at his best when he is being aggressive.

  1. Carr needs to show some eff’g balls and man-the-f*ck-up! Screw these eff’g screen passes that go for couple yards. Even the **** pass calls are going for 2-yarders. We need to flip the script and puzzle the opposing defenses. Throw in some QB run plays w/ Mariota, let Jacobs bust it for over 5-10 yards, hurry-up for a quick/deep pass play and bam! The opposing defenses will start to get off their toes and frustrated. Move them **** chains! And when we get to the redzone, don’t go f*ckin’ limp! Keep the gas on the pedal and go balls to the wall until paydirt! Dammit, c’mon Raiders! Stop eff’g around and get your baller mentality on full steam ahead. Salvage the season fellas!!!

    1. I think it’s VERY CLEAR that Carr’s main issue has ALWAYS been that he is too quick to give up on a play and go with the short dump off play. Plus he locks onto a receiver and fails to survey the field for more open plays downfield. Basically, he’s scared in the pocket. Sorry, but this probably won’t change, this being his 7 or 8th year. Best to trade him while he has some value.

  2. WE WEAR THE SILVER, WE WEAR THE BLACK . . . as much as I love D.C. I think it’s time for a Q.B. change. We CAN’T keep going backwards, I mean, we need to get it together.

  3. He is right, DC seems to function better that way. Less time for him to over think, ponder and worry. Clearly they are not a grind it out on the ground football team. That game where they ran 35 seconds out at the end of the half with timeouts and decent field position, was just playing scared and stupid. Especially when the week before they score in 40 seconds on three pass plays, and your kicker can make 56 yarders at the gun. They need to score more points period, especially this week…..And get mariota in there on regular basis, not one or two now predictable plays a game. Heck give him a whole series or three. Pull your heads out coaches and get creative and aggressive. What do you have to lose !

  4. Whoever thinks that Mariota is the answer to these issues has got to be crazy! Do you think for one minute that these coaches wouldn’t utilize him more or even give him the starting job if he was the better QB of the two? Give me a break Raiders fans… They want to win more than any of us fans want them too! Sucks that we have to gut the losses but we have no choice but to trust that we have the best players on the field come game day!

    1. You CAN’T say that he ISN’T the answer, either. If we are out of the playoffs he SHOULD get an opportunity. One thing for sure is that Carr has had ample opportunity!

  6. Its evident the coach hasn’t a clue or even the guts to mix things up..would be nice tho uptempo no cuddle get Mariota a few series mixed in or more preferably. Sad another season lost.

  7. Derek Carr is 53 losses with 69 losses for his career! In his eighth season now — he’s NEVER even appeared in a playoff game, much less won one. He has great stats, but as Bill Belichick says: “Stats are for losers. Winners look at the final score.” 53-69 Career W/L record??? Who is the loser in this Belichick equation?: Derek – effing -Carr!!!

  8. I’m begging for the no huddle. This team needs a change in attitude and performance. Give it all to Carr. If we does well for us – great. If not, then time to move on.

Gannon was the best; he should be the coordinator over the current idiot.

MM is average at best. He is very limited in throwing ability, see career in TN. He only plays if they are moving away from Carr, and they draft a new QB.

  9. It would be nice to see some faster tempo. A little more gas. Unfortunately we are going into rebuild again come January. Carr will probably end up in a fantastic situation like NOLA. A team that is a halfway decent qb away from a deep playoff run. I’m sure Sean Payton will have him moving at the right speed.
Ugh this is why we can’t have nice things.

  10. Hopepfully we can keep them on that field. We lost alot of players pretty **** good ones too. There aren’t alot of teams that have gone thru what we have and still be 6-6 maybe a few.
    Im just saying

  11. Nothing changes another losing season. Carr at the podium “it’s my responsibility we can do better” . Another NFL retread coach is hired another losing season and Carr back at the podium . When is doing the same thing over and over become insanity ?. Time to go all in on Aaron Rogers !

  12. I don’t understand why they didn’t promote Tom Cable to head coach. And that has a good ring to it, Rich Gannon as offensive coordinator? Just win baby.🤘😌

  13. back to what I keep harping about……everyone want to blame DC and don’t realize where blame should be placed!!!! o-line and receiving room sucks!!!! who is DC, when given time which is rare!!, supposed to throw to???? as much as I love the raiders, I would almost love to see DC go elsewhere for his sake!!!

  14. With Carr’s stats, and several QB needy teams, he should bring in No1&2 picks in a trade. I would trade Carr, draft a developmental QB and roll with Mariota. Carr has had his chance or 7 years on them.

  15. We must.make changes . Highest paid players must perform . Winning is only thing that matters .no. more.excuses..we have suffered too.long. we deserve it as raider fans .

  16. Got to pass on firstdown , second.and third. Open the shotgun formation no huddle. Throw the f n ball. Lets score every f n drive. Cmon Raiders ,5 games. 1 at a time, for each other, for Jon, for us fans!
